Post layer change problems with Casino 10th Anniversary

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with the new version of Casino, particularly after the layer change, or from about 1h38m onwards?

The copy I got was from Canada, and I have had problems with the disc around this point on three different players (Samsung, Sony, Pioneer brands). I suspect it is the disc that is at fault, even though I can not see any scratching, scuffing or discolouration on the disc.

I have applied for a replacement, but would be interested to hear if anyone else has had any problems.

Also, are double sided discs by nature more fragile and susceptible to faults, and thus are generally avoided in favour of 2 disc sets? Or is it more for marketing reasons that special editions normally are 2 discs, rather than one double sided disc?

I avoided this disc because of Universal's past problems with DVD 18, but I was accused of lying about the problem in the Casino thread. My guess is that you have a bad disc, and need to either replace it or eat it as a loss.

Best of luck to you.

Never had any problems with DVD-18s... until Casino.

Side A locks up at the layer change. If I jump to the next chapter via the scene selection menu, it plays again. The problem is: the film seems to play fine on the PC and two other players I've tested.

On side B I'm having playback problems (stuttering) with the Vegas documentary (most likely the first item located after the layer change). This one acted up on one of the other players as well, played fine on the rest.

As is the case with your disc, the DVD is blemish-free. I hadn't applied for a replacement yet because I thought it was a player issue. However, a few days ago I noticed similar reports on a German forum, with the disc in some cases playing better on some machines than others.

BTW, my disc comes from Canada, too.

I had a problem right after DeNiro says "You could say I'm the boss" and the film cuts to the commissioner reading then paper. My playback would freeze and then jump to the scene of DeNiro and Pesci in the desert. Don't know if this was the layer change or not. I took it back to the place I bought it and exchanged it and then it worked fine at that point, but now I'll have to check out the movie again to see if problems come up anywhere else. But there is a (sort of) commentart track so I'll be watching that.

Will,

yes, the spot you describe is exactly where the layer change is.

Also had the same problem this weekend about the same place. First time was when Pesci shows up at DeNiro' house and threatens the investor guy after his losses. Had to skip to next chapter and reverse.

It looks like the U.K. R2 version is going to be a 2 disc edition, with the same extras as the new R1.

So if I have problems with the new copy I get, I'll probably end up getting the R2, even though it will probably cost 2 or 3 times as much as I paid for the R1. :-(

Yes, I'm having similar problems at the layer change as well. My copy goes blocky for a few seconds but then straightens back out. I was thinking about returning it to see if it was just my copy.

Was suprised that had not been discussed here already, as have seen a lot of talk about this on UK forums.

My copy from DVDSoon in Canada refuses to play past the layer change properly on both sides (picture freezes and breakup) on my Sony 725 but plays fine on my Sony F21 and Goodmans portable.

Therefore seems to be there is a problem with certain models of players rather than a generic fault that affects everyone.

My other Universal DVD18s Miamoi Vice, Buck Rogers etc were all fine.

I played the movie perfectly on my Denon 2200 but experienced pixelation and freezing on the "Casino: The Look" documentary. I had simliar results on my Panasonic. I still haven't watched the mob documentaries.
