Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
THE LOVERS
Louis Malle unveiled the natural beauty of Jeanne Moreau in his breakthrough, Elevator to the Gallows. With his follow-up, the scandalous smash The Lovers (Les amants), he made her a star once and for all. A deeply felt and luxuriously filmed fairy tale for grown-ups, perched on the edge between classical and New Wave cinemas, The Lovers presents Moreau as a restless bourgeois wife whose eye wanders from both her husband and her lover to an attractive passing stranger (Jean-Marc Bory). Thanks to its frank sexuality, The Lovers caused quite a stir, being censored and attacked for obscenity around the world. If today its shock has worn off, its glistening sensuality and seductive storytelling haven't aged a day.

THE FIRE WITHIN
After rising to international stardom with such seminal crowd-pleasers as The Lovers and Zazie dans le métro, Louis Malle gave his fans a shock with The Fire Within (Le feu follet), a penetrating study of individual and social inertia. Maurice Ronet (Elevator to the Gallows), in an implosive, haunted performance, plays Alain Leroy, a self-destructive writer who resolves to kill himself and spends the next twenty-four hours trying to reconnect with a host of wayward friends. Unsparing in its portrait of Alain’s inner turmoil and shot with remarkable clarity, The Fire Within is one of Malle's darkest and most personal films.

This is truly fantastic news - all three films, in their own different ways, really helped stretch the boundaries of the modern cinema of their day - three true must-haves!!!

Re: Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
Supposedly Before the Rain was on the site yesterday and now it isn't there or mentioned in the release. I know I was told it was coming in May so I wonder what happened. I worked hard to get it released so I'm anxious to have it in my hands.

Re: Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
I'm itching to see what Criterion have done transfer wise with 'The Thief of Bagdad', but regardless of whether they improve the MGM disc, those extras make it a must have - 'The Lion Has Wings'!

Re: Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
Ron, any possibility that Criterion will FINALLY get off the fence and consider HD releases as there is now one format (BD)? I fear not which is a shame.
I remember the Thief of Bagdad on DVD or Laser from some time ago as looking excellent.

They are already planning to do BD. They're just waiting for a larger market to develop.

Re: Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
If they do eventually start releasing titles on Blu-ray you have to wonder what pricepoint they would go with. With Blu-ray titles from major studios selling for close to $30 and Criterion having left their pricing structure unchanged for SD releases over the last 10 years (and for a good reason), they would have to charge a premium for their Blu-ray releases and so we may be well into the >$50 range for Blu-ray titles. Some titles may be worth the upgrade but I don't see Criterion fans like myself rushing en masse to replace their Bergman/Fellini/Kurosawa catalog titles with their Blu-ray counterparts.

Re: Criterion Press Release: May '08 Titles
If you think about it with from what I see as the majority of people thinking std. DVD as "good enough," the wait will likely be LONG.
