Warner announces new Gangster Collection for March 11th!

According to the digital version of Home Media, Warner will street a new Gangster Collection Volume 2 in March for $60. Titles will include Picture Snatcher, Lady Killer, Smart Money, Black Legion, Mayor of Hell and Brother Orchid. The whole collection is loaded with trailers/shorts/cartoons, etc.
I guess the well still has a little water in it. Crawford/Forbidden Hollywood and now Gangsters all within 4 weeks. Warner and George Feltenstein still rule classic dvd.

Re: Warner announces new Gangster Collection for March

Hmmm, I guess Warner is slowing down with their releases.

Quote:
“The gangster film is a huge cornerstone in the legacy of our studio, and we take great pride in bringing freshly-minted, restored digital masters to new generations of fans via DVD,” said George Feltenstein, Warner Home Video’s SVP of theatrical catalog marketing.

The films, each released during the 1930s and ’40s, come from a time when Warner Bros. was known for its gangster films. All the films are on DVD for the first time, with new transfers from newly restored film elements, as well as Warner shorts, cartoons and trailers.

Mr. Feltenstein and your group, please, keep them coming.

Joan Crawford Collection Volume 2 on 02-12-08

Forbidden Hollywood Volume 2 on 03-04-08

Awesome news! I'm yet to be disappointed with any of their gangster/tough guys/noir or controversial classics sets!

Yes, WB is finally getting back on track with its announcements. What a relief!!!
Cagney, Robinson and Bogart in just one set!
And as a plus 2 of my favorite girls: Ann Sothern and Ann Sheridan.
Thanks Mr. Felteistein for this great set. This news just made my day!

Excellent news, and terrific titles! I remember that several of us at HTF had requested PICTURE SNATCHER, one of Cagney's best, and I like to think that our requests had something to do with its being part of the next set

Re: Warner announces new Gangster Collection for March 11th!

BLACK LEGION is particularly welcome. Bogart's performance in it was once cited in a book called "50 Great Movie Performances That You've Never Heard Of" and it could rightfully be positioned in a gangster or tough guy or controversial classics collection. The story was inspired by newspaper stories about a pseudo-Ku Klux Klan organization that had just been busted up in Detroit area. LEGION would make a great double feature with STORM WARNING.

PICTURE SNATCHER was also inspired by actual events: Cagney's character was inspired (at least in one episode) by a New York Daily News photographer who used a concealed camera to take a picture of Ruth Snyder's execution. The Snyder-Gray murder case was the source of James M. Cain's DOUBLE INDEMNITY.

These are all terrific titles!

Re: Warner announces new Gangster Collection for March 11th!

This is indeed great news....

These are wonderful, important films, and to my knowledge at least 3 if not 4 of the 6 have never been on VHS or laserdisc. They have been on TCM looking like (expletive deleted) for umpteen years, so the thought of the kind of sparkling restoration WB has done on their films of this era is indeed something to look forward to. While it is heartbreaking that most of the MGM original negatives burnt in the Eastman House fire, it's heartening to know that most of the WB original negatives are intact, and can yield superb results.

I assume many here have never seen these movies, and if so, boy are you in for a treat, and a shock or two....They're all great, but MAYOR OF HELL and BLACK LEGION are hauntingly powerful !

Kudos to Warner, and equal shout-outs to members here who have voiced their support for, and interest in these films.

These Gangster sets are among my favorite WB sets. Even though I've made the jump to HD, I'll gladly purchase this set.
