Most recent Die Hard release.

As I don't have immediate access to region 1 titles, I was hoping someone could help me.

I'm looking to get a new Region 1 copy of Die Hard. The internet scans of the most recent release show a weird Christmas packaging.

Is that the actual cover? Or is it a cardboard slipcase with another cover underneath?

Is it a 1 or 2 disc release?

Thanks in advance.

I just saw this at dvdempire.com and it looks like the single disc release of the 2 disc set. It has the commentary & DTS track. Also has the branching version of the movie. The newer release is enhanced for 16x9.

So this is the best possible R1 you could get unless someone knows something I don't know.

Judging by the look of the back cover, it looks like a slip cover over an amary case. I would guess the cover is the slipcase image without all the Christmas colors & bows.

Hope this helps.

Your best bet is to hunt down the 2-Disc Five Star Collection edition, which is currently only available in the Box Set IIRC.

Nope, that was the ORIGINAL release of the 2-disc set in double amaray case (well, I think it was not amaray, but one of those thick, white translucent plastic cases), and that was indeed also included as part of the "Ultimate Collection" trilogy boxset.

But the 2-disc was later re-released as digipak (same contents), this time as part of Fox's spine-numbered collector's edition collection, and that edition seems to be currently and widely available at most retailers.

Edit to add that, while browsing the net to confirm my data, I've just discovered that DVD Empire has a "Die Hard Steelbbok" pre-release coming next June. No info on what it may contain, though judging from past Fox's steelbook re-releases (like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) I really doubt anything new will be added but the "enhanced" packaging, and most likely for a single disc edition.

In the meantime, you can get the current 2-disc Collector's Edition from Amazon.

Roy,

From what I gather, if the above edition is a Digipak, then the cover is primarily cardboard.

I'm ultimately after the version that comes in a normal sized Amaray, so I guess my only choice is the Christmas edition pictured in Joe's post.

I've been seeing the single disc editions for $9.99 for each film, but strangly they seemed to have dumped the DTS tracks on 2 & 3.

Yes, it is a cardboard digipak, but if you go for the single disc you'll be missing a great edition.

You can wait and see what's in that upcoming steelbook re-release, or you can order the old 2-disc Five Star edition (same as the later digipak, but in plastic case) from one of the many e-sellers that are offering it through Amazon, both used and new.

Or even better, you can fork out $36.00 (plus shipping) and get the Ultimate Collection of the trilogy, still available from Amazon, containing the 2-disc edition for all 3 films. Maybe you are like me and have no interest whatsoever in the two sequels; but even at that price, the 2-disc Five Star edition of DIE HARD is a bargain, and just think of the other two instalments as freebies.

Re: Most recent Die Hard release.

Thanks Roy.

Yeah, Die Hard 2 is a stinker and 3 is only mildly enjoyable.

I know this is a bit shallow, but my DVD rack only fits single Amaray sized cases. I think I may just get the single disc.

Thanks so much for all your help guys.

Probably it'll also include something tying into the forthcoming Die Hard 4 release, which is a notorious Fox repackaging habit whenever a sequel to an existing film is on the way.
