Some of these titles I've been eager to catch up with for ages - the Mauritz Stillers, the Jacques Feyders, some of the Karloffs, WARNING SHADOWS (1923), THE MALTESE FALCON (1931), LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971), etc. - and some are relatively obscure even for me - THE BLACK PIT OF DR. M (1958), JIGOKU (1960), HUNGER (1966) and RED ANGEL (1966). PLAYTIME (1967), then, is something of an anomaly: a film of enormous reputation which I was very disappointed by but, despite its not being the (apparently lost) full-length version, I'm prepared to give it another chance by virtue of Criterion's supplement-stacked reissue.

Re: With half of 2006 almost gone, which official upcoming DVDs excite you the most?

I'm most looking forward to:

1. The Little Mermaid Platinum Edition - I've owned the "Limited Issue" non-anamorphic bare bones version since January 2000. I'm more than ready to "double dip" on this title.

2. The African Queen - I know you said "Official" but we're still hearing that it may "sneak out" in the fourth quarter of this year. I sincerely hope so since, as far as I know, it's the *only* AFI Top 100 movie still not available on R1 DVD.

3. Star Wars Trilogy Theatrical Releases - Yeah, I know: These will be non-anamorphic and sourced from the same 1993 DVNR-filtered D1 tapes that were used for the '93 and '95 LD's. But I've never owned a LD player so I've got to have these. I'll just curse Lucas under my breath every time I play 'em!

4. Superman Mega-Box; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest; Cars, Over the Hedge, Monster House, and all the other great Summer hits.

5. The James Bond Lowry-restored re-issues.

Although not officially announced, the Forbidden Planet SE has been rumored for release the last three years; hopefully this will be the year we'll *finally* get it!

I second this thought, though I doubt we will see it this year (perhaps '07). BTW, The Jazz Singer (1927) is the only other title not yet released in R1 from the AFI top 100 list.

I'm also hopeful for Reds and am wishing to see a rerelease of The Last Emperor (an abomination of a first release on this classic)...

My wishlist is fast dwindling. Though fast approaching 2000 titles I no longer have much of a wishlist left. This must surely be the tail end of the DVD craze, started in '97. It looks to have a 10 year run. I don't see much of a rush to jump on the HD bandwagon. That incremental format change seems to have been both highly overhyped and riddled with poor launch campaigns and buggy hardware woes.

Speak for yourself because I'm love what I've seen and heard with my HD players and this is coming from somebody with 3300 dvds.

Re: With half of 2006 almost gone, which official upcoming DVDs excite you the most?

Announced titles I'm most looking forward to:
1. Naked Spur - I've been waiting years for this. My favorite of the Mann/Stewart Westerns
2. The Black Swan - The best non-Flynn classic Technicolor Pirate flick.
3. Seven Samurai (redo) - An all time Top 10 of mine. Somewhat worried about the subtitle/translation controversy.
4. The Maltese Falcon (3-disc SE)
5. WB Legends of Horror Collection - All the films are great fun (well except for Return of Dr X which is kind of a stinker).
6. Double Indemnity (Legacy Collection) - Waiting years for a decent version.
7. Godzilla '54 and the 6-disc Box (un-cut OSL) - though I only really want 3 of the 6 films in the box.
8. Border Incident - the only film in the new Warner Noir set that I'd like to own.
9. Each Dawn I Die - Though I might opt for the entire Tough Guys Collection. dunno yet.
10. ?

The Jury is still out:
Apocalypse Now (complete dossier) - If this was the theatrical OAR I'd be jumping for joy. As it stands I'll be waiting for reviews to see if it's worth an upgrade.
A Fish called Wanda (SE) - The recent poor track record of MGM SE re-releases is going to make me wait and see on this one.
Superman (14-disc collection) - The first film and the Donner cut of II are must haves but I hated III and have no desire to see IV. I guess the deciding factor will be how much I like S Returns and what the bonus discs consist of.

Still waiting for an official announcement:
Blade Runner TUOE (tide us over edition) - If coming in Sept, an announcement should be here any day. right?
2001, A Space Odyssey (2-disc SE) - ditto
A Clockwork Orange (2-disc SE) - ditto
The Shining (2-disc SE) - ditto
Forbidden Planet (2-disc SE)
Duck You Sucker - A recent Glenn Erickson review mentions a fall release is planned. We'll see.
Bond Ultimate Collection - There are 14 I'd want to own. Hopefully the earlier films (1960's) will be a vast improvement transfer-wise.

The Collection (Blu-Ray High Definition/DVD)

Pre-orders - BLU-RAY: Akira, The Dark Knight, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Death Proof, King Kong, La Femme Nikita, Planet Terror, Raging Bull, Ronin, The Third Man DVD: .................
