Original Non Special Edition STAR WARS Coming to DVD..BUT NOT ANAMORPHIC! (post #985)

This was just posted on the Classic Horror Film Board by David Colton, editor of USA TODAY:

Original Star Wars back: Han Solo shoots first! (Again...) We're reporting tomorrow that Lucas is releasing the three ORIGINAL Star Wars films -- without the digital tweaks and effects -- on DVD after all. And, once again, Han Solo will be shown shooting first.

I had a bit of this wrong in the original posting, so lemme try again:

-- As we all know, in the original STAR WARS, Han Solo pulls his gun and shoots Greedo in the Cantina scene.

-- When the film was restored and digitally tweaked for a new theatrical run, Lucas added a moment where Greedo fires first, misses, and then Solo shoots Greedo. As if it was self-defense.

-- Fans objected, and when the film hit DVD in 2004, Lucas tweaked it yet AGAIN, and this time Solo and Greedo shot simultaneously.

-- In the upcoming DVD (due in September), the original scene is back. Greedo warns about Jabba, Solo tries to wave him off and then pulls his gun and shoots Greedo dead.

By the way, the story says the transfer of the 'original' version will not be as pristine and scrubbed as the restored DVDs. In fact, at one point there was talk the originals no longer existed.

Anyhow, once we publish (in USA TODAY), tomorrow, I'll post the entire story.

Why doesn't this thread have 10,000 posts in it already?

All those people who complained that these films weren't availible in the non-director's cut form should now post their graditute to George Lucas.

Let's hear it:

Well, kick ass. I will happily double dip, as I've always said I would do if the option was made available. I hope they at least try to restore it to some degree, though.

If Colton says it is happening, it's from an unimpeachable source(probably Lucasfilm itself).

I'm sure we'll get the full scoop tomorrow.

Not completely shocking, but I thought Lucas would wait a few more years before going to the well again! This should stagger well with the HD/Blu-Ray release in a few years.

Brilliant timing, now everybody, myself included, will buy them even though HD-DVD will be sitting right beside them on the shelves at Best Buy. No doubt just as HD-DVD is about to become obsolete, they'll be released in that format. At least it's happening, I thought I'd have to make do with my VHS set.

With DVD editing software available, this could make for an interesting multitude of home grown "personal preference cuts" containing parts of the special editions people like and stuff from the originals to replace the changes most people hate (Greedo shoots first, "bring my shuttle" reworking in ESB, etc.).
