superbit dvds over rated?

Are superbit dvds over rated? I have seen some before and they didn't looked nor sounded any different than the standard edition. Which superbit movies are actually worth getting over the original?

Depends of the person. It seems in your case you dont notice a difference whereas I like the Superbit discsvas I prefer the DTS track on them due to better bass. But like I said, this will vary from person to person.

The compression is generally a bit better on Superbit DVDs.

To answer your question: No they aren't.

Lawrence of Arabia would be one.
XXX would be another
Bad Boys 2 would be another

Those are of recent vintage. Pretty much now if a disc I want is a Columbia Tri-Star is released, I expect a Superbit and wait for that. I've yet to be dissapointed when purchasing one. They are all better than the originals so far. There might be an exception or 2 but I've found those to be rare. IIRC The Professional was a Superbit with issues. The only one I know of.

Partly it depends on what kind of system you have. If you're using a 27" TV, then you're not likely to see much difference in picture quality. If you have a larger display or a projector, the improvement in resolution is more apparent. Also if your system can handle DTS, a lot of people prefer that over Dolby Digital.

To add to Shane's comment, The Fifth Element SB is a significant improvement over the original R1 release. Charlie's Angels too.

I like some Superbits and think there are several which are better than their regular dvds. However there are other studios that put "Superbit-like" dvds out usually with extras on the second disc for the same price. That is a bit annoying at times.... but all I have to do is watch and listen to Spider-man 2 Superbit to know that I enjoy them.

yea I believe I read on this forum that the bad boys 2 superbit looked grainier than the original. I have just heard that some superbit are not worth getting over the original. I just wanted to know which superbits stood out from the rest.

I am sorry if this topic has been covered before, but I couldnt find anything on it other than reviews and of that sort.

There are different review websites that compare different versions of DVDs.

DVD Beaver (they also host another website's comparions

And if you use DVD Basen, a DVD review database, you should be able to find reviews and/or comparisons of DVDs you are interested in. You'll find that other countries like Japan sometimes get better transfers/audio (Superbit, non-SB, releases we don't get here).

I personally have SB versions of:
Spider-Man 1
Spider-Man 2
Fifth Element (got it right before Ultimate Edition, with the same Superbit transfer, was announced)

As stated above, the DTS track on SB versions is also a welcome addition (even though sometimes the difference is minimal).

imo, for your average, joe six pack dvd viewer there is not a reason for them to purchase a superbit dvd. many of them do not have larger viewing screens or digital sound setups.

now if you have and 50"+ screen and the ability to play dts tracks then superbits are worth it. but keep in mind just as all regular dvd's are not created equal not all superbits are created equal.

listen with your own ears...
watch with your own eyes...
make your own decision.

Here's what I found just by searching for threads with "superbit" in the title:
