Kinda disappointed with THE SCALPHUNTERS package, it makes the film look deadly serious, when it is very lighthearted in tone, and for HUNTING PARTY, suprised they didnt use the poster of Gene Hackman and his scope rifle, and the human trophys!

THE SCALPHUNTERS! Outstanding! That's one I'll be picking up for sure. However, I wish DAY OF THE OUTLAW (1958) was part of the May 2005 batch of westerns. Oh well, maybe next year...

I love Westerns. Love 'em. But this a disappointing line up.
But, being a Hackman maniac, I might just go for The Hunting Party. It's one of the most violent, weird, moving, flawed Westerns ever made and ol' Gene is, as always, totally compelling.
Indeed, where is Day of the Outlaw? Superb Western. Robert Ryan is excellent. Beautifully shot in b&w by the great Russell Harlan and De Toth's firm control combine to create a solid, memorable Western. In addition to this, MGM should also release De Toth's brilliant anti-War film, Play Dirty (1968) starring Michael Caine, which they also own; there is no VHS, there was never a Laser and TV screenings are panned and scanned from 2.35:1 Panavision.
Man of the West, is simply put, one of the greatest Westerns ever made. I adore Mann's films and Man of the West is badly needed on DVD.

Worth getting, IMHO, The Scalphunters, Invitation to a Gunfighter, The Hunting Party and Hour of the Gun
Man of The West is coming soon in R2 (anamorphically enhanced you'll be pleased to learn); I'm sure an R1 release won't be far behind.

Not the best of Western Titles, but I'll certainly pick up "The Scalphunters" and "Escort West"
