Lord of the Ring DVD's

Hi Guys!

I am gonna be asking for the Lord Of The Rings DVD's for Christmas. I am asking for the trilogy because a friend said I will like them even though I am not into period films. What I was just wondering is what is the difference between the regular and extended editions of the film? I read somewhere on the Internet that Peter Jackson said the extended edition was something just for the fans. Am I correct on this or not? ANY help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Take care,
Patrick

The extended editions are significant expansions of the theatrical cuts. The shortest of the extendeds, Fellowship, clocks in at about three and a half hours, while King will end up at over 4. They're improvements overall to the movies, but I think many of the improvements will be less noticeable by first time viewers and are more geared towards those who have read the books. That said, anyone can benefit from the enhanced characterization regardless of familiarity with the books. Fellowship is a great movie either way, but Two Towers especially hugely benefits from the expanded breathing room that the extra 40+ minutes give it, although at the price of ending up as one long movie.

That said, my preferred cuts in both cases thus far is the extended version, and by no small margin in either case, and I have no doubt RotK will keep this up. As for specific differences, IMDB has a decent listing, although few would make much sense without seeing the movies first.

I imagine anyone watching them would become a fan and at some point just might read the books. The Extendend versions fill many holes in the Theatricals. They better explain many relationships between some of the charactors, and heck with DTS they just plain sound better! (and the addons are seamless too!)
