My Apollo 13 doesn't play either.
Sean A, do you have that e-mail address for Universal Home Video? Did you ever receive a replacement disc?
Thanks,
Jerry

What is coming up to need a OUT OF SIGHT Re-do? The current edition is quite okay as is. Univer$al needs to remaster TREMORS though.

Well, well, well.

Also coming from Uni is a 2-disc Apollo 13: Anniversary Edition on 3/29 (SRP $22.98). This will also be available in two separate versions. Both editions will contain the original version of the DVD, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and all the extras that were on the original collector's edition release. One edition will contain the anamorphic widescreen version (2.35:1), while the other will contain the full frame release. Disc Two will then contain the more recent IMAX version of the film in anamorphic widescreen (1.66:1), with audio in Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1. When I noted it's an anniversary edition, that's because the 35th anniversary of the actual Apollo 13 mission is 4/11/05.

This has got me scratching my head. Why the hell bother with a pan and scan release when the second disc is going to have a near full frame transfer? You can either watch it Full Frame or almost full frame. A waste of energy. And if you get it in widescreen, why would you bother with the "IMAX" version which has no meaning in home video. It looks like there is no reason for me to upgrade, unless of course, my current disc rots.
If they want to throw the IMAX version on there, fine, but it seems like a dumb idea and they could have done better things with a new edition (although the content on the first release is pretty hard to top)

My APOLLO 13 plays just fine in my Philips 909 and 414 players. It also plays just fine in my Sony 715 and my DVD-ROM drive in the computer.
Of course, I should point out that my APOLLO 13 is one of my more recent purchases, so it's not likely not the original pressing.

I checked my copy and it's just fine.
How can you tell when it was manufactured?

I tend to agree with you, Will. I think some edits were made to the film to shorten it such that it was compatible with IMAX projectors, but I don't think the IMAX version of the film is substantially different enough to warrant DVD release (and around two years down the road?). And certainly not at the expense of U still not giving us the supps. and DTS on the original feature--which this re-release does not appear to do, sounds like DTS is only on the IMAX cut--especially if the original DTS release is not going to be available any longer.

Hopefully this bodes well for new SE versions of The Deer Hunter & The Sting, both of which are SORELY needed.
|
There's already a Deer Hunter special edition with a Michael Cimino commentary if you're interested .

Yeah, a lot of early Universal titles have crapped out, but there are many more that are OOP. Thousands! If you don't get it when it comes out you may end up without it!
Sorry to have to be that way but consider this - They press them and go on to something else. If they want it done again, they have to 'schedule' the time at the pressing plant.
Of course, in the meantime, they have other new disks to crank out, so when the initial pressing is all sold, that is it.
