I look at double-dipping as an unfortunate part of
this great hobby of DVD collecting. Yes, the studios
are sneaky for not announcing future versions of
films already on DVD, but it's up to us to decide
if the future version is really worth spending the
extra cash.

I will double-dip on DVDs with improved video, an
OAR re-issue, commentary tracks, or documentaries.

I won't double-dip on stuff like the 3 disc version
of Pirates Of The Caribbean or the re-issued 3 disc
set of Spider-Man. The 2 disc sets of these films
are good enough.

Pretty please, with sugar on top,
clean the f**king car.

I've doubled dipped, but I've always ditched the previous editions on eBay or giving them to friends. With the exception of LOTR, for which I've gladly double-dipped with the intent of keeping both.

Right now I'm paring down my DVD collection. Any DVDs that I never intend to watch again and don't expect any friends or children or grandchildredn will ever want to watch, they're going on eBay. I'd rather get back some shelf space for the discs I intend to keep forever.

I don't see why we should tolerate it because it's DVD. Would you have tolerated it on VHS? Or CD? Or audio cassette?

I've personally bought movies, only for better versions to come down. It may be self martyrdom (as James put it), but really, you can't complain about it unless you're trying to do your part to stop it. I am. James apparently is. Do two people make a difference?

Nope. But if 250,000 of us said "Nope, screw you", then perhaps the studios would realise that fleecing the customer is a bad idea.

But as it is, a lot of you seem to be willing supplicants to the studios bleeding your wallet dry because they've got a couple of new extras and an extra 3 kbps bitrate.

I have NEVER bought a movie that I didn't plan on watching multiple times. If a movie doesn't have rewatchability I wouldn't buy it. Yes, I have 1000 dvds, but they are all movies that I will gladly rewatch over and over again during the remaining 40 or 50 years of my life, and I will never need to downgrade my collection, because there's nothing extraneous in it to begin with. Every dvd I buy because of improved picture quality is one of these rewatchable films.

Same here, George. For me, it got down to hitting age 40 and realizing that even if I live to be 80 it would be physically impossible for me to watch each and every film in my collection over and over and over. My parents used to tell me this when I was 20, and I didn't understand. Besides which, I'm constantly newly discovering old classics I'm seeing for the first time, and wish to buy on DVD! Just too much out there to hold onto dead weight you'll never revisit.

The one area where we differ is about never needing to downgrade. Speaking for myself, there have been movies that for some reason or another have lost their appeal and I eventually feel have lost their re-watchability. I used to love them, now I no longer have any desire to see them anymore. In those cases, if they "expire" for me, I will unload them. This has happened to me with AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. It was one of my favorites but after several viewings over the years I just felt I never wanted or needed to see it anymore. It's a very rare occurrence.

Just this weekend my brother counted the DVDs Ive given him over the past 2 or 3 years - 42. All because of upgrades

Ive been more patient recently, I have no choice as I bought a house and Im going to have to watch how I spend.

Ill upgrade a older disc for a newer version, like Goodfellas and Born On The Fourth. Im not much for features, so usually the barebones version will do me just fine - though for films like Hellboy or Spidey2, I do enjoy the "Making Of" features.

"I have NEVER bought a movie that I didn't plan on watching multiple times. If a movie doesn't have rewatchability I wouldn't buy it."

Id say 80% of my collection is essential while 20% is stuff I could do without. Ive bought DVD blind, but only ones that come with glowing recommendations from someone like James Berardinelli, who I think has great taste in film.I think I bought maybe 10 DVDs blind I wasnt happy with. Not too bad.

I will also go thru my collection once a year or so and ebay off or give away the stuff I think is just taking up space.

I wish I was friends with some of you who give away your old versions when you upgrade
