You should definitely wait for reviews. If the differences in video quality are negligible, you only have to buy it once. I know I'm only buying once this time no matter what.

With high definition coming in just a couple three years, I think the 2 discer is one I'll get. Superbit would be nice, but I'll buy this one again when it comes to Bluray or HD-DVD.

of course... they may end up using the exact same transfer, and then just substitute a DTS track for the audio commentary track.

This is ass. Sony has no problem adding DTS immediately to stuff like Monster and Starship Troopers 2, but their big titles they double dip on. If this went superbit deluxe first, it would have been great.
The extras sound SO nice, but if the pic and sound is a lot better on the superbit, its that for me. Why cant they do what fox and new line do all the time, which is do it right ONCE!

Because they know there are a number of consumers out there(some of whom have posted in this thread) who are willing to buy both versions.
As much as I hate Sony's marketing strategy, I have to admit I've been suckered into double-dipping a few times thanks to their Superbit label. Although at the same time, I tend to pass on a lot of their initial SE DVD releases just to avoid the possibility of repurchasing the title somewhere down the line, so overall I'm actually spending less money on Sony DVDs than I could be.

True, at least they are giving us both versions on same day so the decision is somewhat lessened. But the DTS track, while preferred, is not a deal breaker unless the video is a big improvement. I will be waiting for reviews before passing judgement on which I get.

If the video looks good then I'll get the 2 disc.

Andy, it's perfectly possible. Look at a number of top-quality DVDs like Se7en, Fight Club, BHD Deluxe, LotR EE, Toy Story, Star Wars II and others that have one or more commentaries along with other special features on the same disc as the movie, and all have very high to reference quality images. The Superbit label is nothing more then Sony screwing us out of more money, because they know they can. I can guarantee they intentioanlly keep the video quality of their standard releases below a threshold so as to justify the Superbit release, which is one reason that I've never bought a single one. On my TV I can'tt ell a difference, we'll be well into HDTV by the time I can afford one htat will show, adn I don't feel like supporting such a crappy marketing gimick when other companies generally try their best to make the standard release Superbit (New Line, Warner Bros. 20th Century Fox, Criterion, etc.).

I'll probably buy the super-bit. I didn't really like the extras on the original 2-disc Spidey 1, and quickly sold it and bought the R3 super-bit.

Columbia's Superbit titles are no better than, and often inferior to, the best transfers from other studios such as Fox and Warner. Those companies don't see the need to have these stupid multiple releases. So Columbia gets no kudos from me.
And why can't the Superbit package include Disc 2 for all the other extras (besides commentaries, etc.)?
I'll probably get the Superbit, but this marketing strategy makes for a less than satisfying buying experience.
