David Lean Collection
DVD Empire has just "re-announced" the David Lean Collection (IN WHICH WE SERVE, MADELINE, THIS HAPPY BREED, etc.) for the original release date of 9/13!

DVD Empire told me September 7 (again, back to the original date) for the individual titles I had pre-ordered (In Which We Serve, Madeleine, The Passionate Friends and This Happy Breed).

...and today, I got more e-mail from DVDEmpire, pushing these titles back to a "TBA" release date.
*sigh*...

Is there anyone at MGM or Home Theater Forum who can give up the skinny on what's the deal with these?
I've never heard of a pending release that has been held back, put back, and then withdrawn.
Anybody know anything?

Does M-G-M hold the DVD rights to these films?

My guess is that it has something to do with a licensing issue with Criterion on the GREAT EXPECTATIONS and OLIVER TWIST titles. They are bringing out a somewhat impromptu collection including these titles called "Great Adaptations" on 9/7. I understand that the MGM/UA "Hitchcock Collection" --never formally announced--is also in limbo and may have some Criterion issues with the Selznick titles (SPELLBOUND, REBECCA, NOTORIOUS). All of these are through the auspices of Carlton in England and that may also be part of the problem.

David Lean Collection Comparison Questions
Okay... Now that the David Lean Box set is out there, has anyone compared these transfers with the Criterion ones? That is, OLIVER TWIST, GREAT EXPECTATIONS and BRIEF ENCOUNTER? And how do the other titles hold up transfer-wise? Are any of these worth replacing the ones I already have?

MGM postponed this to a date as yet to be specified didn't they?

It could be that it is on hold until Warner takes control of MGM and release the films in a "Signature Collection" boxed set with Lowry-restored transfers from newly-minted prints, commentaries, interviews, etc. As I gather, MGM were just going to release them bare bones from existing interpositives with little clean-up.
