What's up with "The Karate Kid"? Practically OOP and Full Frame only?

The Karate Kid is one of my favorite movies, and is an 80s classic, IMO. Unfortunately, the DVD is nowhere to be found at any store around here, and it is out of stock at Amazon.com. (along with the other 3 Karate Kid flicks) Columbia doesn't even seem to have it available for purchase on their site! And the only version of KK that currently exists is Full Frame only! What gives? I hope Columbia is planning on releasing a Special Edition of the first movie...and maybe even releasing a KK box set like WB did with the Police Academy movies. Something must be done...the original Karate Kid is way too good to be OOP and P&S only. Does anyone know of plans for a SE or something? My VHS copy has had it, I need a good DVD.

Why would you care if it was "practically OOP" if it is pan and scan and not of interest to you anyway? I have long hoped the sinking Sony video division would re-issue this in 1.85:1, but lately their policy has been to do the opposite. Maybe they can find a way to re-issue KARATE KID in an even worse format than it's already in - maybe mono, with lots of edge enhancement, a studio bug on screen, forced commercials... and then call it a SPECIAL EDITION!!

Dick: I never said the current Karate Kid DVD was of no interest to me...why do you think I've been looking for it online and in stores?! Don't put words in my mouth. Sure, I prefer widescreen to P&S, but since its the only version available at this time, I'd buy it, and replace it when/if a SE is released.

I'm really suprised there hasn't been a widescreen release of this. I'd probably buy it.

The Mighty Ducks got OAR (which I'm sooooooo happy about, seriously) and I wish this series would too. I wont buy the sequels without the original.

I would like to have Karate Kid on DVD too.

The Mighty Ducks is not available on DVD. There is a widescreen VHS though. At least I thought that's what I was watching.

That was most definitely sarcasm, just as Kyle suggested. It was the most horrible video transfer I've ever seen.
