I have not seen this posted yet, here is what The Digital Bits has to say

Quote:
There is big news that I wanted to chime in with now, however. 20th Century Fox has revealed that they'll be releasing Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ on DVD on 8/31 (SRP $29.98). There will be few (if any) extras, so that the maximum video bit rate can be achieved for the film presentation. The disc will include both anamorphic widescreen and full frame versions, as well as audio in the original Aramaic/Latin in both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround (with English and Spanish subs). Sources are telling us that a more elaborate special edition release is in the works, for a possible Easter 2005 release. You can read more on this here, here and here. And here's the cover art...

So according to this the disc will have Both WS and P&S versions included with DTS and DD 5.1. Nothing about it says 2 discs. DVD-18? I guess this means no burned in Subs as well. I would have prefered that as generated subs can look terrible.

I don't care about extras, so I'm glad to get this early as long as it's OAR and has digital sound.

Sounds like it'll sell a lot of copies upon release. But my wife and I have already decided that we'll wait for the SE in 2005. No sense in double-dipping just to get the bare-bones version first, followed by an upgraded SE with all the bells and whistles added on.

So does that mean P&S on one side and WS on the other, both w/ DTS & DD 5.1?

If so, which of those sides takes up less space so extras could be included? (not saying they would be)

I look forward to this DVD, but would love to have the option of watching this film w/ the subtitles off.

Peace,

DM

The disc has widescreen and P&S versions, Mel isn't about integrity, he's about making money. I'm guessing most fans of this flick are Walmart shoppers and he wants to cash in on that.

No, he's saying he wants the option of removing subtitles with the original language remaining, since the early word from Mel was that the movie would have no subtitles. A lot of us are hoping to be able to experience the film in that manner.

I think people like the profile view, it can be very iconic. The Mission: Impossible and Return of the Jedi "Advance" have to be two of the most recognized posters ever. I wouldn't call this a "floating head." The image really gets to the heart of the picture, as it evokes the renaissance artists.

The marketing really tapped into the Lord of the Rings audience I'd say. The lettering font for the title is very similar. Plus the movie was released just when ROTK had started to slow down at the box office. I think it says something for people's interest in well told stories from the Old Country that are handled with respect for the material. Of course, in the case of Jackson's LOTR trilogy, it could just be the communal mentality of geeks to perpetuate all poorly paced, pretentious horror epics through the Internet. But, I really doubt it.

Personally, I would be fine with a quote from the Pope, or some other, well known leader of the Church on the cover or elsewhere. Though, I completely understand why people would find it offensive and unwarranted. I think there needs to be some type of commentary along with this film, though, since obviously many people didn't get what the filmmaker was trying to say.

PS. Thanks to the HTF mods for keeping these threads very civil. There aren't many places on the Net where you can find civil discussions regarding this film. I think they are being very fair; it's a lot of work.

I believe The Digital Bits is incorrect regarding both the widescreen and full frame versions being on the same disc.

They are being released separately.

Yep, widescreen and fullscreen are released seperately. Here's the relevant quote from the press release 'Priced to own, the DVD is available in Widescreen or Pan And Scan for $29.98 and the VHS is $24.98'

Yeah, I think I'd like to have the option to turn off the subtitles also, if only to see how differently the movie plays since this was the way it was originally intended to be seen. It might make it even more visually intense since the viewer's eyes won't be drawn down towards the subtitles.
