THE MARX BROTHERS COLLECTION (WARNER) - Official Thread
To prevent a million scattered threads about this set (and the individual discs residing in the set), I thought I'd create this thread.
To answer some Frequently Asked Questions:
YES: These films do come in keepcases, not snapper cases.
YES: These films have been remastered.
YES: These films do include extras, including the double features.
YES: These films are the MGM films, NOT the Paramount films, Warner does not have the rights to the Paramount films.
YES: The Paramount films ARE available, but only in R2 from Universal. The Cocoanuts, however, is not available
NO: This does not mean all of the Marx Brothers films are now available on DVD. Love Happy is yet to be release, but apparently it is coming from Koch-Lorber in June.
NO: The double features are not available on their own, only in the boxed set.
I watched the documentary Remarks on Marx and the film Go West last night. Go West is still a lot of fun for me, and their most underrated feature film. However, I still prefer Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, and A Night at the Opera. I looked at all of the discs, they look great. I can't wait to dig into this set over the next few days.
Please add to this thread, hopefully it will inspire good discussion and help people with questions about the set.

Preventing such is the task of the moderators.

My jaw is still resting on my chest after reading the review of the set at dvdfile; I can't believe he has the same set that I have (or indeed the sames copies of A Night At The Opera and A Day At the Races that Herb has reviewed on the forum).
Warners have done a first rate job with this set, from the films themselves to the inclusion of the shorts (I loved Robert Benchley's A Night At The Movies) and cartoons and the plethora of other extras - and the whole set cost me a little over £20 delivered! One of the bargains of the year IMHO.
Now the ball is firmly in Paramount's court; I believe Universal has done a less than steller job with the R2 set (reports on the transfers are mixed, and the extras are thin) - hopefully they will see what Warners have done here and try and match it.

I got this set yesterday, and spent all of last night watching it, or maybe I should say, delighting in it.
I can't remember when I have laughed so much in one sitting.
To Mr. Hodson's point, you bet these films look great, and the presentation is first-rate. I love all the extras, especially getting to hear from the ageless Kitty Carlisle about the making of "OPERA".
Marx fans should be celebrating this gorgeous presentation.
Also a note to classic animation buffs: There is a treasure-trove of rarities here, all new to DVD of course, but some that never even made it to VHS or Laserdisc. In the latter category are two great B&W "Captain and the Kids" cartoons and the rare "Jitterbug Follies". Not as rare, but for the first time on DVD is Bob Clampett's "THE DAFFY DOC". I may be wrong, but I think this is the first B&W Looney Tunes release to end up on DVD! Last, but not least, is a fun, early Hanna-Barbera MGM cartoon called "Officer Pooch".
The packaging is stunning, and after years of begging we finally see the beautiful Warner Classic releases in KEEPCASES....and they sure look terrific.
I doubt Universal will try to deliver a presentation up to
what Warners has done here. They'll likely squeeze all 5 of their films on 2 discs, charge $25 for it without extras, and that will be that. I'd also love to be wrong and see them actually but a little care into their classics like Warners does, but I doubt that's a possibility.
This collection is my pick for classic comedy release of the year. Thank you, WB.

I've just read Todd Doogan's comments over at thedigitalbits.com; cue the sound of my jaw thudding down on my chest for a second time today...

I'm sorry if I rubbed some of you the wrong way. Why can't we just merge all the threads? No reason to get hostile or anything, this is the internet.

Lyle, try to become more familiar with this place before taking such initiatives. One authoritative thread -- from Robert Harris -- already has been linked here, and we have another discussion currently in progress. Hence, this thread's closure. Nothing personal. JB
