Thanks for the info on "Force of Evil." For only $7.19 at DeepDiscountDVD.com, I went ahead and placed an order.

Since yesterday Universal announces on their homepage instead of the previous five Film Noirs they would release in the summer only four: THE BIG CLOCK, THIS GUN FOR HIRE, CRISS CROSS and DARK ANGEL.
The long awaited Billy Wilder Film-Noir-Classic DOUBLE INDEMNITY has vanished from their July-Lineup
By using the search-function on their HP you get this:
We're sorry, but no match was found for your search of 'double indemnity'.

Seems, they have cancelled DOUBLE INDEMNITY for a release in the near future
...that`s very bad news

AHHHHHHHHH!! Well, at least I knew better than to sell my Image copy. I still have it to watch in a pinch.
I was curious about it's release when artwork for the other four titles were posted last week. Hopefully, this means that someone came to their senses and their going to do this film proper and give it an SE. ...or maybe, they'll make a Billy Wilder Boxset with the other titles under their control (Five Graves to Cairo, The Major & The Minor, & A Foreign Affair).
What am I thinking? This is Universal!

If true then I don't have any problem waiting as long as this excellent film is done justice with a great dvd presentation by Universal.

This is very disappointing news for me as Double Indemnity not only was the film noir I was most looking forward to having on DVD this year, but frankly of all the DVDs coming out this year, this was the one I was most anticipating.
Let's hope the cancellation is just a delay and might perhaps be due to Universal wishing not to cut corners and take the extra time to properly restore and create a top-notch transfer with a nice collection of extras.
I certainly hope this DVD doesn't disappear like Buena Vista's Special Edition of Ed Wood.

If this is indeed the case I'll be happy. But it would be nice to let us know...

I'm just interested in THIS GUN FOR HIRE. I just hope the transfer is good.

>>>My friend Ole (of DVDBasen) has reviewed Force of Evil, HERE with screen captures. It's not too bad, considering.<<<
How about posting a comparison with the French DVD of Force of Evil (Wildside Video)? Their version includes several supplements and much nicer artwork. From what I understand, the English version has forced French subtitles, tho some players can bypass this annoyance. How do the transfers compare? If the transfers are the same, I will probably go with the Artisan version.
And, on a related note, can anyone compare the Artisan and Wildside Releases of Body and Soul (also starring John Garfield)? The Wildside version has plenty of extras and the same subtitle issue as Force of Evil.
I already own Artisan's Body and Soul and it is quite pathetic.

yeah too bad about Double Indemnity, hopefully it will be released with loads of special features including an audio commentary.
Was there an audio commentary on the LD ?

From the Department of Wishful Thinking:
Maybe Universal cancelled the (apparently barebones) Double Indemnity release because they've licensed it to Criterion for a deluxe edition ...
Personally, I'd rather pay a little more to have this seminal film done right than get a cheap re-hash of the (barebones) Image release.

Agreed! I would happily paya MUCH larger sum of money to have this film treated properly.
