Hollywood - A celebration of silent film

I have had this on LD for years. Anyone have a line on any plans to release this on DVD?

Nothing so far...

So far, none of the Thames documentaries made by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill have been released to DVD. Cinema Europe and the Lon Chaney doc are the only ones out so far (and both are Photoplay productions, rather than Thames).

I've tried contacting Freemantle (who now owns Thames), but no replies yet. I think HBO may still hold the video rights, too.

A DVD edition would really be great if the whole show was remastered from scratch (especially the sound) and the clips were taken from better quality sources when possible.

DVD editions of Unknown Chaplin, Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow, Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius, D.W. Griffith: The Father of Film, and Universal Horror would be fantastic, too.

This series came up in another thread about Hollywood related docs. Don't remember if anyone had any pertinent info, but here it is in case you're curious:

I'm really not sure but I doubt they would source video screenings, I'll check though.

Well, if you are not a fan of silent film then you should see it - It will change your whole perspective on silent film. I know it did for me.

Looks like Network's DVD (R2) is coming out on March 20th:

http://www.networkdvd.co.uk/new_releases.htm

Even better, Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow is coming out on Feb. 27th:

http://www.networkdvd.co.uk/product....26&PROD_ID=332

I'm guessing U.S. releases won't be far behind.

Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! See and hear what you're missing from their Bitsy Award winner of Worst Standard Edition DVD of 2006 on YouTube!

HOLLYWOOD (4 DVDs) can be pre-ordered from www.hmv.co.uk for the amazing price of GBP £17.99 (far cheaper than anywhere else). I don't know their international shipping costs - I'm in the UK so shipping is free.

Network are releasing more silent treasures at amazing prices: on Feb 27, a 6 DVD set THE BUSTER KEATON CHRONICLES (or BK COLLECTION) which seems to include all Keaton's pre-MGM silent features and (oddly) all but two of his non-Arbuckle shorts. The editions of OUR HOSPITALITY and THE GENERAL are the Thames Silent editions which, in my opinion, have the best scores for these films (esp. THE GENERAL). This is staggering value at GBP £17.99 from HMV (compare the price of the similar Kino set). It even includes the 1968 documentary THE GREAT STONE FACE.

And on March 20 Network release their DW GRIFFITH COLLECTION which (according to www.play.com) will contain THE BIRTH OF A NATION, INTOLERANCE, BROKEN BLOSSOMS (Thames Silent versions I expect), plus WAY DOWN EAST and THE AVENGING CONSCIENCE. I don't know which editions of the latter two - I don't think the Poe-inspired 1914 feature THE AVENGING CONSCIENCE has been available on DVD anywhere before. I had hoped the set would also include Kevin Brownlow's DW GRIFFITH - FATHER OF FILM documentary series but this doesn't appear to be so. Anyway, this is again terrific value at GBP £13.99 from HMV.

There is even a suggestion that Brownlow's HAROLD LLOYD: THE THIRD GENIUS may be released soon in the UK (Network again?) It was included in a February (printed) newsletter from Bensons World but I cannot find it on their or any other website, so it's either been delayed or dropped.

Bizarrely, we still await UNKNOWN CHAPLIN here in the UK!
