Re: DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

I haven't heard it myself, and I know I've argued this endlessly and no one seems to agree with me, but I cannot believe that, labeled or not, the EX track is not on the KING KONG DVD. It just doesn't make any sense. The amount of time, effort, and money that would have to be put into making a less marketable, inferior product is ridiculous.

I've always gone under the assumption that if a movie is 6.1 theatrically, it'll be 6.1 on DVD as well. One of the sources cited as a contributor to this thread is WIDESCREEN REVIEW. I've talked to a guy who wrote for them back in the early days of EX, and he said that they were working under the same assumption. In fact here is a quote from Perry Sun on the very first page of this thread:

"I admit that this will confuse the situation, but in regards to the DTS-ES matrix titles listed, except for those that are also DTS-ES discrete, these titles generally have actually originated from the same six-track, Surround EX-encoded printmaster as for the Dolby Digital version.

In other words, there isn't necessarily a special DTS-ES Matrix encoding for these, but with (at least) some of these titles a flag has been inserted into the DTS bitstream which certain decoders (DTS-ES, THX Surround EX or equivalent) can detect and automatically decode in DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, THX Surround EX, etc."

There are movies on this list (like THE MEXICAN) which I have only seen listed as EX in WIDESCREEN REVIEW. So if you guys really think that this is not the case, that entire list on the front page will have to be reevaluted to figure what can be 100% confirmed as EX and what can't.

But even if that is done, I would still argue that logic would suggest that a theatrical EX movie should be assumed encoded for EX on DVD unless proven otherwise. And as far as I know, that's never happened.

EDIT:

THE FOUNTAIN is coming to both Blu-ray and HD DVD, and PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is coming to Blu-ray.

THE NUMBER 23 is being released in DTS ES discrete. And you know...

6.1 channels, 6-1=5, and 5 can be split into 2 and 3... 23!

Oh, Schumacher. Why?

SHAUN OF THE DEAD is EX, and that's supposedly coming to HD DVD shortly as well.

HOT FUZZ is EX encoded, and it's rumored to be coming out on HD DVD later this year.

Cool, the theater I'm going to has it in their big room with an EX processor so maybe they'll switch it on.

You shouldn't have to worry about, because the prints are flagged properly to automatically switch the processors to EX.
