I was surprised when the new Harry Potter movie didn't have a DD-EX soundtrack like the two previous ones.

It does... check the list.

I really thought that studios would start releasing more and more DVD's this way as it seemed it would be a great marketing tool (similar to Superbit).
I think it is to some degree but to be honest I'm still doubting that there are enough of an audience with 6.1 speakers wired up to justify it. The only way to find out is to make 2 discs(one with Ex and 1 w/o) and see what happens.

It may not be more expensive but what about the extra effort it takes to mix the soundtrack for 6.1? I tmight not be much but perhaps some studios just don't wish to put the effort into that.

Why would you want to do that? A 6.1 mix is 100% compatible with a 5.1 system.

I doubt there is any effort involved at all. Most major releases are probably mixed for more than 5.1 channels.
Isn't SDDS something like 8 or 9?

Well in the context of my post what I wanted to say is that by putting out an EX version and a non EX version you could tell if people are willing to pay for it or not. This was in context of the whole "EX is a marketing thing" discussion.

Hmm...Go figure.

Wonder why my Pioneer vsx-811s wouldn't do it? I'll just have to force it the next time I watch.

Oh man, I didn't even check the sound menu.

I guess disregard everything I posted before. I figured all that menu was for was to change the language.

Oops.

Troy, Open Water seems to be missing from the list. It has correctly flagged DD-EX and DTS-ES Discrete tracks.

Because all DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 soundtracks are also Matrix 6.1 compatible.

OK.... stupid question. I am upgrading my amp to a Denon AVR-1905, and in the specs it only specifies "Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, Dolby Pro Logic IIx" and so forth. Will it allow for discrete decoding? How do I tell? Are there some amps that are only "MATRIX 6.1" compatable, but not DISCRETE? I'm so confused (more than usual).....:b
