Buena Vista Reports That Disposable DVD Test Successful

From Hollywood Reporter:

March 12, 2004

Disposable DVDs to spin faster

A five-month test of low-cost disposable DVDs has yielded enough positive response from their sale in pizza and convenience store chains to prompt Buena Vista Home Entertainment and its partner Flexplay Technologies Inc. to double its retail presence. "We are extremely happy with the test, which proved that there is a consumer desire to have an alternative to traditional video rental," said Lori MacPherson, BVHE vp brand marketing and product manager. "That's why we are more than doubling our retail test markets and adding additional titles." Detractors of the disposable discs, called ez-D, have cited a lack of top-shelf titles available on the format, which was developed by New York-based Flexplay in cooperation with GE Plastics and is manufactured by Technicolor. The discs are playable for 48 hours.

Rolando,

I don't understand French too well. Could you put your comments in English? Thanks.

They are elated by the ability to screw over both the consumer and the environment at the same time. Making more money at the same time is like icing on the cake.

Wait a sec....

Was I dreaming or was there a report published
a few months back that basically said that the
disposable DVDs were a flop and that stores had
decided to stop carrying them?

Of all of the trends in DVD that I dislike, this is one of the top two worst.

I too read an article on the slow business for them. I wonder what happened to change Disney's mind so fast.

\"Lot 666 then: a chandelier in pieces. Some of you may recall the strange affair of The Phantom of the Opera, a mystery never fully explained. We are told, ladies and gentelmen, that this is the very chandelier which figures in the famous disaster. Our workshops have repaired it and fitted up parts of it with wiring for the new electric light, so that we may get a hint of what it may look like when reassembled. Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination, gentelmen?\"
