So what exactly is the big deal about these things? If people don't like them, then they don't have to buy them (and I won't be buying them).

The problem is that the disposable DVD might be the only choice you have to watch some movies. Most people here at the HTF want to own the movie and watch when and how often we please.

And why would they do this? Because they did it with Divx? That comparison doesn't hold water, because the home video market then (very rental-centric) was very different from what it is today.

Ask Warner for a DVD SE of Here Comes The Navy (1934)!

Patrick,

I am choking in pain over that Baghdad Bob
photo and statement.

He is certainly the best pitchman Disney can
have for these disposable discs.

And why would they do this?
If they were smart or logical, they wouldn't. But then again, if they were smart or logical they wouldn't want be trying to keep this afloat despite the bad test results. Which is just one more example of a company doing something stupid. Just because it would be stupid to have an EZ-D exclusive title doesn't mean they wouldn't do it.

I heard on the news today that Disney plans to lower the suggested retail price for EZ-D one dollar from $6.99 to $5.99. This link from Reuters also mentions it:

If so, it's their right to do so (and forego sell-through revenue amd a hit to their bottom line). Since their goal is to maximize profits, however, it's a fair bet to say that they won't. They know very well that if they leave money on the table, there are other studios that will snatch it up in a heartbeat.

Personally, I think their goal here is to cut into "hot new release" rental market currently dominated by big chains.

Even at $5.99, though, I think this idea is too expensive to fly.

How are disposable rentals any worse than for-sale discs? They all end up in the trash eventually. Wouldn't a pro-environmental DVD stance require rentals only?

Are there any rental-exclusive titles? If not, why would EZ-D change this, since it's just another rental scheme?

Are EZ-D discs incompatible with DVD-ROM players in computers?

Come to think of it, I've seen Netflix exclusives from time to time.
