I don't even know where to start regarding this topic but, yes, I agree. I have a full page on my site devoted to OAR (original aspect ratio).

Well, it's more like 40% with scope (2.40:1) films, but whatever gets the message across.

Just support CORRECT PRESENTATION.

For "Academy Ratio" films like Citizen Kane, Modern Times, and Gone With The Wind... Fullscreen is appropriate.

For true widescreen films like Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, and The Passion of the Christ (with ratios varying anywhere from 2:1 to 2.55:1, with exceptions) widescreen, with some black bars is correct.

For films which must be matted (cropped on the top and bottom) to achieve the correct ratio such as North By Northwest (from 1.55:1), the Lord of the Rings movies (from about 1.33:1/2:1 depending on the shots), or American Pie (1.33:1 to 1.85:1) need to be shown accordingly.

Also, it's important to accept special compositions as reccomended by the filmmaker(s) for home video such as Apocalypse Now, The Recruit, and The Shining.

HD-DVD has the potential to be a great format, but only if it's used right. Citizen Kane must maintain its fullscreen ratio and Lawrence of Arabia must retain its Super Panavision ratio (2.21:1).

Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! See and hear what you're missing from their Bitsy Award winner of Worst Standard Edition DVD of 2006 on YouTube!

I can sense a very long thread coming.

How much of the picture is lost on a 2.35 movie cropped to 1.78, like HBO does?

Even more interesting, INHD has been running IMAX films (1.44) cropped to 1.78. How much is lost there?

While this is a 2.21:1 example, here's what the conversion of Lawrence of Arabia would look like at 1.78:1 (centered):

john_o, it seems you're trying to break down doors that are already wide open...

VERY few movies are going to lose two thirds of the picture, though - only those with a ~4:1 OAR. And, of course, a lot of old movies are supposed to be 4:3 "fullscreen". The majority of my collection consists of non-WS titles.

I for one, am shocked (SHOCKED!) to learn this. I guess I have no choice but to throw away my Paramount Full Screen Collection now...
