Tom: Hmmm, I got Foolproof on release, I talked about my alleged issues with it in the Canadian/U.S. DVD thread, forget the details now, but it was supposedly the only Canadian one available, and by the accounts I got (not here, don't think I got any response actually) it was not OAR. Perhaps not, you got a different one...I returned mine unopened. IMDB stated (at the time) the Canadian one was FS I think...mine was, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, it was re-released in June. I actually saw that one in a store, and it was different than what I got in Feb. As you can tell, I'm confused about it...I didn't buy the new one because I thought it was rather expensive.

Anyway, I did not order DotAE because it was Seville, easily worse than AA in content reliability. I hope I'm wrong, because I'd sure like to get it, but I bet there will be some serious flaw with it. Well, let us know about it, maybe in a different thread. As for AA, 1.78/85 vs 2.35 is a serious flaw IMO.

Sorry for my rambling, I've just become very intolerant of AA recently, as opposed to my ongoing disappointment with AA. I'll add Lions Gate and Seville to that bunch, they must think we're real stupid, when we can so easily get U.S. releases instead.

The Movie (112 minute version)

Does anyone have any details of this 112 minute version of the film?

The Barbarian Invasions is my favourite film seen at the cinema so far this year. I already bought it on UK region 2 DVD (released by Artificial Eye). I'm excited to know that there's a longer version of the film available (hey, you can never have too much of a good thing ), but I'm a little upset that I may have bought the wrong DVD.

Btw, The Barbarian Invasions was shown in 2.35:1 at the cinema, and the UK DVD is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic. It also has two audio interviews given by Denys Arcand, two deleted scenes and a trailer, but no other extras.

Later.

My understanding is that the longer version mainly contains dialogue and references that were unlikely to be understood by audiences outside the province of Quebec ( where the film is set ) and thus a more mainstream cut was prepared. The long version played cinemas in Quebec ; everyone else ( including English Canada ) got the alternate cut.

Although I haven't seen the theatrical cut, I didn't feel that there was anything in the 112 min cut that was not understandable. I didn't notice any scene that "didn't belong". However, there was one Bush joke which I don't know if it was in the theatrical cut or not. I wouldn't be surprised if Miramax cut it.

It's still there in the theatrical cut. Just so you know.

hmm..then I don't know what would make Miramax cut any of the scenes out then. Nothing too "Canadian" IMO.

This whole aspect ratio issue just got more interesting (or maddening, depending on your point of view). I decided to pick up the Miramax DVD, and guess what? It's 1.85:1, contrary to what the box says.

I'm watching it now, and I have to say that the framing looks fine. I wish I could remember the AR from my theatrical viewing, but I was so absorbed in the story that I didn't pay it much attention.

I'm seeing it at a film festival in a couple of days, so I'll try to remember to note the AR.

Yeah, the Miramax version is 1.85 as has been posted, and the framing looks fine to me. I'd really like to know if someone knows the exact differences between the extended unrated cut and the Miramax US theatrical cut.

Here's a review of the US (Miramax) DVD from The Digital Review.

Brilliant film, and I'd be interested in purchasing the Canadian unrated cut if I only knew what the differences were.

Not that this provides a definitive answer to the question, but the excerpts from the film used in the documentary "Inside the Barbarian Invasions" are letterboxed at 1.85:1.
