Was it just me or did it seem that this year the Academy was pandering to those in the Pan and Scan population? Meaning, there were many films that they showed clips from that should have been letterboxed and not, and the when they showed LOTR clips, several of them were 1.85 shots.
Most of the time, it seemed that not only was the visual quality of some of the films that were presented no up to par, but at times, from the chacater generator was going off the screen. At times, it was almost like they were trying to pay homage to the old kinoscope days.
It was like this on all the televisions that we had in our house, so it wasn't just the way that our main television was set up.

You hit it head on. And the wonderful thing was that the titles of actors or movies was half out of the screen. They were cropped for on air. Maybe a last minute problem. It never happened before. What a way to honor the dead and their movies!

Timmy, you brought this up....what was also annoying about those segments...
It would have been great to not only have the person's name, but maybe also a film or two that they were in. While most of the people I knew, there were still some that I sat and wondered "just who the hell is that?"
Hell...maybe they were there, and they were going off the screen as well.

The reason the titles, pics and some video went off the screen, is because they were designed with HDTV 16x9 in mind, but did nothing for the vast majority of the population still watching in 4x3. If you were watching in HDTV last night, there was no problem at all with the onscreen graphics.

Well that makes sense...
Still have not had the funds to go that advanced yet...other things to do besides that...
But...if that is the case, if some of those clips looked that bad on our 46 inch, I would hate to image how shitty they must have looked in HD.

Correct. The clips were cropped to a roughly 16:9 aspect ratio on the 4:3 broadcast. Like most broadcasts in both HD 16:9 and SD 4:3. The live shots were generally framed in a 4:3 window in the center of a 16:9 frame.
Unfortunately, the clips in question were probably around 2.4:1 letterboxed on the 16:9 broadcast, and 4:3 broadcasts showed only a cropped center extraction of that. Yuck.

why is this an issue?
they werent showing movies, they were showing very short clips of movies.
it didnt bother me one iota.
now if they were showing a movie in the wrong ar then thats an issue.

This has already been discussed at length in the Academy Awards discussion thread.
