WTF? Got screwed while "Good Will Hunting".

By reading previous threads on this board, I learned that there were two R1 versions of Good Will Hunting (one Letterboxed - one 16x9).

The 16x9 version apparently does *not* indicate 'widescreen' on the cover and *does* list 'enhanced for 16x9' on the back.

Simple enough.

So I buy a copy of the '16x9' version and guess what...it's letterboxed!

Worse, the catalog number on the disc (#14888) matches the one on the packaging...so I have little grounds for return of opened product.

What's the deal? Is there really a 16x9 R1 version or is this just another packaging misprint?

IMDb doesn't seem to support the idea of an R1 16x9 release:

Where did you buy it? The 16X9 version is available only in Canada distributed by a company called Alliance. I purchased my copy from DVD Soon. Here's a link to the actual DVD.

http://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml?uid=6705

The picture shows the "Widescreen" in an arch, but mine is straight across the top with the Title right below it in large letters. Right below that in small letters is the title in French. I don't see "Enhanced for 16X9" anywhere on the box, but mine is.

The UPC number is 65935 22710

I pursued the same ridiculous situation as you are and finally succeeded. Why the US version is not Anamorphic is beyond comprehension.

Hope this helps you a little.

Bought at a local B&M.

Thought I was getting the 'newer' release: rectangular banner on front 'Mirmax Collector's Series'.

Starting to doubt there is a USA 16x9 release.

I've never heard of the anamorphic one being in the USA.

A word to the wise: there is no 16x9 USA version of GWH.

Ignore any packaging statements to the contrary.

I had seen some of the early comments on this previous thread, but not the latter ones...

I hopes this prevents any further disappointments.

Buyer beware.

Just a point of clarification:

The Canadian release is R1, but you would have to order online or go to/be in Canada to get it.

just go to the thread frank posted, read that one, and about 5 or 6 posts down in tthat thread find 2 more.

these will make it clear that no one has ever found a u.s. version of gwh that is anamorphic, among the many different releases of that dvd.

GWH is not one of those movies you want to have playing in the background while parking the yacht in hair harbor. I recommend "Yentl" or "The Verdict".

Whenever the laws of any state are broken, a duly authorized organization swings into action. It may be the called the State Police, State Troopers, Militia, the Rangers, or the Highway Patrol THE CITIZENS AUXILIARY POLICE!!! These are the stories of the men whose training, skill, and courage, have enforced and preserved our state laws.

I ordered the Canadian version from www.northamericandvd.com

It's great. I highly recommend it. OK, not perfect great, but still better than the Non-anamorphic US versions.
