Winner of Two National Board of Review Honors
Debuting on DVD and VHS April 27
Culver City, CA (February 16, 2004) - Seven-time Oscar® nominee Norman Jewison
(The Hurricane, Moonstruck, Agnes of God), directs Oscar® winner Michael Caine (Best Actor
in a Supporting Role - Cider House Rules, (2000), Hannah and Her Sisters (1998)) in the
intense, critically acclaimed political thriller, THE STATEMENT. The phenomenally talented
cast includes Tilda Swinton (The Deep End, Adaptation), Jeremy Northam (Gosford Park,
Enigma), Charlotte Rampling (Spy Game, Angel Heart) as well as Oscar®-nominee and Tony
Award-winning actor Alan Bates (Gosford Park, The Sum of all Fears) in his final film role.
The movie makes its DVD and VHS (rental) debut on April 27 from Columbia TriStar Home
Entertainment and Sony Pictures Classics.
DVD special features include director's commentary, deleted scenes, and exclusive
interviews with Norman Jewison and Michael Caine.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Brian Moore with a screenplay by Oscar®-winner
Ronald Harwood (The Pianist, Cry, the Beloved Country), THE STATEMENT was the recipient
of two National Board of Review honors including the Billy Wilder Award for Excellence in
Directing for Norman Jewison and Special Mention for Excellence in Filmmaking.
Inspired by actual events, THE STATEMENT is the story of Pierre Brossard (Caine)
who, as a young man during World War II, committed a heinous crime. Over the course of more
than forty years, Brossard has never been brought to trial and has lived a peaceful and
anonymous life sheltered by right-wing elements of the French government and the Catholic
Church. A new investigation into his crimes is launched by an ambitious judge (Swinton) and a
scrupulous army officer (Northam). Even though Brossard manages to outwit the state
investigation, he is simultaneously tracked by mysterious hit men. With two hunters on his
heels, this wily old fox must try to stay alive and find out who is after him.
