I have a $30 DVD player that does a pretty good job with PAL DVDs. That isn't expensive. May not be at the quality level of standard r1 DVDs, but for titles otherwise unavailable, well worth it.

Richard,

There are a few on your list that are out there.

CHINA 9 LIBERTY 37 is available in some of the Millcreek 50 movie packs. I haven't seen it but, judging by other Millcreek titles, it probably isnt the greatest quality, but is watchable.

COMIN AT YA is available (with glasses). AMITYVILLE 3 is flat on US DVD, but 3-D on R2 (it isn't very good though).

A few others have been recently announced, but I'm sure you already know.

The oppo players do a GREAT job with PAL discs and output native PAL at 576P for those whose displays can handle it.

I just realized HOUSEKEEPING(Columbia) from 1987 was never released on laserdisc. Chances are, we will never see a dvd release for this great film. So sad.

Light of Day (1987)!

Features great performances by Gena Rowlands and Joan Jett + finds a way to deploy the Michael J. Fox personality in a new and interesting way... It was written and directed by Paul Schrader, who has quite a following...

Why did I have to get this on VHS through ebay?

(I'm sure the 4.8 rating on IMDB isn't helping--but I really don't have a clue what movie those people saw...)

I am deep admirer of Paul Schrader's work, but I have not seen Light of Day, so I'm with you on that one, David. A commentary by Schrader would be a must. His track for the anamorphic R2 of Light Sleeper is superb, btw.

Here's Roger Ebert's review of it: 3 1/2 stars

Re: Films that you fear may NEVER be released on DVD.

Just wanted to mention, one film mentioned previously in this thread, 1968's TWISTED NERVE with Hayley Mills (and the theme that was used in Quentin Tarantino's films) was recently released as part of one of Mill Creek's 50 movie packs. Box Office Gold

Amazon.com: Box Office Gold 50 Movie Pack: Box Office Gold 50 Movie Pack: Movies & TV

I believe this is the first release on any form of video in the US.

Very good, clean transfer too (although I'm sure being a Mill Creek release, many here will hate it because of compression issues).

And I am sure WB wount be happy with this release, as well as StudioCanal for THE STEAGLE.
