Sticks and Bones (1973/Robert Downey, Sr.)

This controversial CBS television production of David Rabe's Tony Award-winning anti-Vietnam War play created quite a stir (with a number of CBS affiliates refusing to broadcast it). It concerns a blinded Vietnam veteran returning home to his embarrassed and unfeeling family (named after characters from the old "Ozzie and Harriet" TV show). In retrospect, the play/film had a similar method (and impact) as Jules Feiffer's Little Murders (the very fine Elizabeth Wilson played the mother in the Broadway run of Sticks and Bones--for which she won a Tony, and the mother in the film version of Little Murders).

I saw it as an eleven-year-old, and it had a tremendous impact on me; some of its strong imagery is as vivid to me today as it was in 1973.

To my knowledge, it has never been re-broadcast, nor has it ever appeared on home video.

"song of the South" is rumored (from good sources) for a 2006 release.

Oh yeah... another one just came to mind. "The Pee Wee Herman Show"... that classic HBO comedy special from the early 80s before Pee Wee became well known from the movie Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I'd love to have the full uncut special on DVD, because the version I've seen in recent years (usually shown on Comedy Central) is censored and has about 10-15 minutes of the more gratuitous comedy edited out of it. This was a darker more adult version of the Pee Wee Herman humor we've seen in his movies and his Saturday morning kid's show. It's hilarious and I wish HBO would release it on DVD.

There's a watchable DVD bootleg of "The Pee-wee Herman Show" circulating. I won't get into how one can obtain it but I will say that it occurred to me while watching it that music rights are likely the reason that this special isn't officially available on DVD. There is a scene where Pee-wee performs a tribute to Sly and the Family Stone. The medley samples a number of their songs and would likely be a nightmare to clear for home video release.

I also saw "Crimewave" mentioned a couple times in this thread. Panorama Hong Kong released a region-free NTSC DVD of the film. It's far from reference quality (non-anamorphic and roughtly VHS quality) but it's actually the most complete version of the movie ever released as far as I know. IMDB.com lists the following alternate versions:

Quote:
The Japanese laserdisc version features a longer scene with Arthur Coddish and Nancy. When Vic comes back from getting more suds for Nancie's dress. In the theatrical version Vic does not go back into the apartment because he finds Helene Trend out in the hallway tied and gagged.

When Helene Trend is looking out the window watching Donald Odegard in the office, Ernest Trend in the theatrical version yells "Get away from that fucking window!". The Japanese version omits that line.

This DVD version includes the extended scene AND features the aforementioned omitted dialogue. While the packaging reads "Crimewave" the title card in the movie itself says "The XYZ Murders" with cheap-looking video-generated subtitles beneath it that say "AKA Crimewave". The packaging says it's Region 3 but it is in fact Region-free. It also simply says that it's 4x3 but more specifically, it's letterboxed. I'm a huge fan of Sam Raimi and the Coen brothers but there's really no escaping what an absolute trainwreck this movie is, but if you're a fan it's worth checking out. You get to see a few Raimi and Coen regulars, plus you get to see the original use of one of the best jokes in Raimi's "Spider-Man". Also, you get a great Bruce Campbell performance.

Don't you ever, EVER compare me to "Family Guy," you hear me Kyle? Compare me to "Family Guy" again and so help me, I will kill you where you stand!

Do you have any idea what it's like? Everywhere I go: "Hey Cartman you must like 'Family Guy,' right?" "Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of 'Family Guy' Cartman!" I AM NOTHING LIKE FAMILY GUY! WHEN I MAKE JOKES THEY ARE INHERENT TO A STORY! DEEP SITUATIONAL AND EMOTIONAL JOKES BASED ON WHAT IS RELEVANT AND HAS A POINT, NOT JUST ONE RANDOM INTERCHANGEABLE JOKE AFTER ANOTHER!

"Duet for One" starring Julie Andrews, Alan Bates, Max Von Sydow, and Rupert Everett.

Great performance. A very natural and different side of Andrews. Probably the best she had done in many years.
