Yes, I hope that a lot of you people who have not seen anime before come in and try to watch some of it. Don't worry, we will help all of you out. I am a newbie to anime, and I would like to suggest a series for newcomers. Crest of the Stars. This series turned my world upside-down, and my opinion of anime too. I know that many people will suggest Cowboy Bebop, but I have not seen that yet, as many of you AAD posters know . I would also suggest watching Akira. It is a very good anime movie.

A very good online reference for anime newbies is Chris Beveridge's Anime on DVD web site (www.animeondvd.com) . Lots of reviews and extras.

I second 'Crest of the Stars' it's a very good and brainy Sci-fi epic.

the recommendation page on www.animeondvd.com is excellent

I suggested this in the other thread long ago, but could Mr. Rob Lutter have a recommended/sorted list on the first post of the thread to look back on and reference?

This is my kind of thread.
Easier for folks like me. :b

How should it be organized? Genre? Member who recommended it? A-Z?

rob - not sure if you want to tackle such a task, but maybe it could be organized like the indie/foreign film thread?

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...hreadid=117734

basically the first few posts are reference links to other reviews, etc.

[c]The Official HTF Anime Recommendations List

Compiled and maintained by Tony-B, "The ever penniless and hopeful to win the lottery otaku, who gazes longingly at the list he dutifully compiles and updates on a regular basis at the request of those more fortunate than himself" - Woo Jae

Currently 54,138 characters (including spaces) long! (Source: Microsoft Word's word count feature)

Last updated on November 3, 2003

(Sorry for taking forever to update this thing. It's just that nothing really needs to be added here, seeing how most of the series are completely released at this point. Also, I am quite busy with school and everything. I hope you can understand where I am coming from.

I added recommendations from Mark Perkins, Adam_D, Ben Phillips, DaveGTP, Jesse Brickzin, Rob Lutter, Matthew Shaw, and Todd Terwilliger. Due to overwhleming demand, I added FLCL to the comedy section. Millennium Actress was added to the movie section. I also updated TV info for Cowboy Bebop, Inu Yasha, Banner of the Stars, GTO, and Hellsing. Of course, the NRY notations and release dates were updated. A new volume was added to Initial D. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it was really a ton of stuff! Especially gathering recommendations! Also, take a look at the most recommeded list at the bottom, because that was updated too!)

NRY = No Review Yet
OVA = Original Video Animation (in other words, it is direct-to-video in Japan)
ALL TV SHOWTIMES LISTED ARE EASTERN TIME[/c]

COMEDY
  • Ai Yori Aoshi (Rob Lutter, Michael Morris, Kong Chang, Jesse Brickzin, JohnAD, Adam_D, Mark Perkins, Ben Phillips) (8 RECOMMENDATIONS)
    REVIEWS
    Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, Volume 5.

Geneon is bringing out the next series, Ai Yori Aoshi: Enishi. The first volume will arrive sometime in early 2004.
  • Chobits (Rob Lutter, Kong Chang, Michael Morris, Jesse Brickzin, Adam_D, Mark Perkins, Ben Phillips, DaveGTP) (8 RECOMMENDATIONS)
Special note: This series was made in 1.78:1 Widescreen.
    REVIEWS
Volume 1 (Available in 3 editions. Regular, with series box, and with series box and stationary kit.), Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, Volume 5 (Coming November 11, 2003) (NRY).
Geneon has not announced all of the volumes yet. Watch here for the latest.

The Anime Network on TV is will be showing episodes of Chobits on demand sometime soon.
  • FLCL (Adam_D, Rob Lutter, Woo Jae, Mark Perkins, Brendan Brown, Bryan_Bortz (Who likes it so much, he wanted to recommend it twice, but I wouldn't let him! ), Eric Chang, Earl_Roberts, Rob Lutter, Kong Chang, Bill Harris, Todd Terwilliger, Matthew Shaw) (13 RECCOMMENDATIONS)
    REVIEWS
Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3 (It is also available with a box, but it is really hard to find now.).

FLCL airs on TV every Monday morning at 1:00 AM, and Tuesday-Friday morning at 12:00 AM and is repeated at 3:00 AM on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The problem is that they show it dubbed and edited. However, Cartoon Network made very few edits to this show!
  • Fruits Basket (Rob Lutter, Kong Chang, Brendan Brown, Woo Jae, Mathew Shaw) (5 RECOMMENDATIONS)
    REVIEWS
    Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4.
  • GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) (Rob Lutter, Kong Chang, JohnAD, Mark Perkins) (4 RECOMMENDATIONS)
    REVIEWS
    Box Set #1 (Includes Volumes 1-5 in a box, and a GTO T-Shirt) (Coming December 2, 2003) (NRY), Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, Volume 5, Volume 6, Volume 7, Volume 8, Volume 9, Volume 10.

GTO airs on TV at 9:00 PM every Monday-Friday on SHO Next (Part of the Showtime Unlimited package). I assume that it will be shown dubbed, but I just don't see them editing the show, since it is airing on a premium movie channel.
  • His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) (Rob Lutter, Mike Franklin, Brendan Brown, Woo Jae, Kong Chang, Tony-B, Ben Phillips, Jesse Brickzin) (8 RECOMMENDATIONS)
    REVIEWS
Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, Volume 5, Box Set (NRY).
  • Love Hina and the movies: Christmas Movie, Love Hina Again, and Spring Special (Rob Lutter, Tony-B, Dome Vongvises, Kong Chang, Martin G, Michael Morris, JohnAD, Jesse Brickzin, Mark Perkins, Adam_D) (10 RECOMMENDATIONS)
