i'm just hoping that when another goes bad, it will still be in print.

I have never seen an official word from any industry leader on how they propose to solve the main problem. if they dont do anything....you can bet that many titles will belly-up and THEY WILL go oop. they will get you to buy the same disc over and over, then when it's gone, they will say, "oh, was there a problem?". I keep buying dvds on the faith that something will be done...things will get better. but if every title I own was on vhs, I'd be buying blanks for back-up. the whole point is I want to watch the film. less visual and audio quality? sure it is. but I'd rather be able to watch it than go without. I keep telling myself that I need a new hobby. but films are so imortant to me...for now it seems I'll eat what I'm force-fed and pray for the best, but I refuse to let the issue of pathetic manufacturing fall into the cracks.

Rohan -

I can't believe that no one else has commented on your post. I found those pictures fascinating. I agree with your assessment that the issues on DVD's is due to manufacturing defects and the UV bonding seems like a likely offender. It is great that you are getting some industry folks to take notice. If only it could filter back here to the states.

Laters,
Jeff

This is the problem with the DVD format: The bullshit (excuse my language) copyright restrictions. Every CD I own is archived @ 128-320Kbps variable bit rate MP3 on a 120GB RAID mirrored partition. With the price of hard drives nowadays, it won't be long before DVDs can be stored in all their glory on an archive. With the upcoming drives from Maxtor, due to be released any day now, I can get 2TB of RAID 5 storage for under $3k. Make it $5k including the server & all various components. If you figure an average of 6GB per movie, that's 333 discs on a single partition.

333 discs.
All accessible, simultaneously, by any PC in the house.
With the appropriate control interface, you wouldn't even know the movie was being streamed to your projector by a computer.
And every bit of it on a relatively permanent archive, assuming you keep up with server maintenance.

This is where we're at with music. This is where we should be at with DVDs. Unfortunately, some key players in the industry have decided that they know best for you, so you can't legally do this.

After reading this post yesterday, I decided to give my Sweet Hereafter disc another spin. Just finished watching it all the way through. Also looked at all of the supplements (except commentary and isolated score). Absolutely no problems. I bought this disc back in 1999. This is only the 2nd time that I have watched it (in case frequency of use has anything to do with problems). Watched it on a Panasonic RP-91. Great movie! I liked it better the second time through.

I'm starting to get worried about my collection now. I read somwhere that gladiator has problems, and I own the movie ever since it came out, I played it the other day in my Apex, and sure enough, its problematic, freezes and skips and pixelates, but in my DVD - ROM it plays just fine, So it cannot be THE ROT, can it??? also same thing with THE GREAT ESCAPE, it skips na pixelates on the scene where the germans first find the tunnel underneath the furnace and on my DVD-ROM its fine. Other movies play well on my APEX. I just want to know if the disc is rotted would it play in some players but not others or would it not play at all.

Marcin, every player uses error correction to fix small data errors on playback. It is possible that one player will play a rotted disc where another won't.

On all the discs I've had rot, it was obvious there was a deterioration going on from visually inspecting the playing surface. They all had an unusual appearance compared to other DVDs, with spotiness, or a mist-like appearance.

My copy of The Sweet Hereafter has suffered the same fate.

And mine...can't believe I missed this subject from last year.
Doubt that anyone will jump to this last post to answer my question but I hate to start new threads for little reason.
My DVD of this is now gone but I do have the Laserdisc, which I would switch to when the DVD would start to freeze.
My LD is 2.00:1 with a commentary by Atom Egoyan and Russell Banks.
How does the DVD compare as to aspect and extras?
