but if every title I own was on vhs, I'd be buying blanks for back-up.

This is the problem with the DVD format: The bullshit (excuse my language) copyright restrictions. Every CD I own is archived @ 128-320Kbps variable bit rate MP3 on a 120GB RAID mirrored partition. With the price of hard drives nowadays, it won't be long before DVDs can be stored in all their glory on an archive. With the upcoming drives from Maxtor, due to be released any day now, I can get 2TB of RAID 5 storage for under $3k. Make it $5k including the server & all various components. If you figure an average of 6GB per movie, that's 333 discs on a single partition.
333 discs.
All accessible, simultaneously, by any PC in the house.
With the appropriate control interface, you wouldn't even know the movie was being streamed to your projector by a computer.
And every bit of it on a relatively permanent archive, assuming you keep up with server maintenance.
This is where we're at with music. This is where we should be at with DVDs. Unfortunately, some key players in the industry have decided that they know best for you, so you can't legally do this.
