Blown speakers streaming DTS-HD MA from Sony BR player to Onkyo receiver

just bought the sony bdp-s350 and took it home and watched my first blueray movie (the bank job) in dts hd master and i paused it for a momment and when i pressed play a loud pop came from all 7 speakers. How is this bad you ask i broke 3 of my tweeters on my polks. i called sony and they told me thats to bad and will not replace my tweeters. The moral of this story is if you want blown speakers buy a sony BDP-S350.
DO NOT BUY SONY PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!!!

re: Blown speakers streaming DTS-HD MA from Sony BR player to Onkyo receiver

As you know, busted tweets are the result of feeding them high power signals that contain lots of distortion (both THD, & IMD).

In all likelhood, this was caused by something in the Sony disk player. What amps are you using?

Some receivers, pre-amps and passive croosovers contain special limiting circutry to eliminate this possibility.

Too bad yours did not.

Anyway, does Polkie still service (repair) these? If not, move up to JBLs which the factory continues to suport - even for stuff that rolled off the line 40 years ago!

I moved to JBLs this year but still have a few multi-channel sets made by "Kliphorn." The Kliphorns are about 10 years old and they really blow compared to the early models from the 60s-70s.

So, the lesson learned: stay away from Sony and buy JBLs Professional Series drivers.

Yes i called polk and they told me they are sorry (even though its not thier fault) and is overnighting me some tweeters. I love polk customer service!!!
I have a onkyo 805 and i thought the reciever would know if something like that was happening (distortion, popping, etc). O'well i just have never purchased a good sony product EVER. I should have known better but they should not have sold products with known issues.

Actually, this is not a Sony issue but more with your receiver.

i will call onkyo on my lunch so i will let you know what they say. I hope someone will fix this (sony or onkyo) because i should not have to suffer losing my speakers to a flaw in engineering.

Sorry that happened to you. I'd be upset too but like Rich said your Onkyo product, not Sony, likely caused this to happen. It's been a known problem for quite a while now.

Since this is a fault with your Onkyo, you really should change the title of this thread.

re: Blown speakers streaming DTS-HD MA from Sony BR player to Onkyo receiver

As indicated by others, I don't believe this is in anyway related to the Sony BDP-S350 which just passes the DTS-HD MA bitstream for decoding to the Onkyo receiver. The fault is elsewhere, likely with the Onkyo receiver. I have the Yamaha RX-V663 and Samsung BD-P1400 and have played a couple of discs with DTS-HD MA but I think I will safely use my Sony PS3 which decodes and outputs PCM until I know for sure this same issue won't bite me.

I do understand the frustration of the OP having a serious equipment failure occur from simply playing audio from a Blu-ray disc but a little research would have enlightened him to the cause. Despite the thread topic, using the Sony PS3 or any other Blu-ray player that decodes DTS-HD MA would be one way to avoid the problem. Hopefully firmware will be available soon to fix the Onkyo and Yamaha receivers that have this issue.

Does anybody know if the RX-V663 will have the issue if I bitstream? I read the threads on the receiver and the problem and didn't come to a definitive answer. I could find no firmware on the Yamaha site to address the issue and I am not certain the receiver can be updated by firmware I might download anyway.

Chris

Agreed. I mean it´s totally misleading now. These "loud pop"-issues were reported months ago (with certain Yamaha and Onkyo receivers at least).

re: Blown speakers streaming DTS-HD MA from Sony BR player to Onkyo receiver

Come to think of it, I own the same Onyko 805 receiver and it clicks and pops all the time!

This seems to ocurr only on the Cable TV input and not the DVD player.

Are the Onyko fellas recalling this piece of garbage?

I never liked this receiver - too hard to set up, bad instructions, over rated amp section, poor 5.1, 7.1. THX sections....

He can't. Only a moderator can, but I'll do it now.
