Is My Onkyo '605 Set Up Properly?
Hi All!
I have a Panasonic 'BD10A Blu ray player going HDMI OUT for audio AND video (no other connections at all from this deck) to an Onkyo TX-605 receiver's HDMI IN (1)...from there, I have a second HDMI cable going from the 605's HDMI OUT to my Sony KDS-50A2020 HDTV's HDMI IN...that's it...no other connections are being made (except, of course, for my speaker cables coming from the 605 to feed my Polk bookshelf array)...
Is this the correct setup for passing all audio and video to my receiver and TV from the player? I have the HDMI MONITOR set to ON in the 605's setup menu and everything else is calibrated -- but should I be getting 1080p video from the player out to my TV through the receiver with this "HDMI loop" setup? Does the 605 pass 1080p straight over HDMI to a display with no degredation if it's HDMI IN, HDMI OUT?
I just read an article in the recent issue of Home Theater which compared a bunch of high level receivers and their video processing abilities....when they got to the Onkyo 805 I think it was, they mentioned something about an onscreen menu "taking away" resolution from the HDMI output for video, and they suggested leaving it off -- is this the same thing as my 605's "MONITOR OUT" selection? This article concerned me because it mentioned picture degredation -- even digitally over HDMI -- when this on screen menu was on...
I just want to make sure I have everything set up correctly to pass video from DVDs and Blu rays and audio from these discs BOTH over HDMI; I believe everything is set up correctly in the player, because when I play back DVDs with legacy Dolby and DTS tracks, the bitstreamed signals come into the 605 just fine, with "Dolby D" and "DTS" illuminating on the display...and the decoded TrueHD tracks from Blu rays come over as PCM signals to my 605 with "MULTICH" reading on the display...but I want to make sure VIDEO is being transferred through the receiver okay from the player to the display...
When I press my SXRD's DISPLAY button on the remote, the upper right hand corner DOES read "1080p" as the INCOMING resolution from the player, but does this necessarily mean I am SEEING 1080p?
If anyone can help with this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks Home Theater Forum friends!

Yes, you have it setup correct. Press and hold display to see what the 605 is outputting. The 605 will pass thru the 1080p signal.

Re: Is My Onkyo '605 Set Up Properly?
As David said, it sounds like you're configured to see/hear everything to the best of each components abilities.
I haven't seen the Home Theater issue you mentioned yet...must still be in the mail. However, it sounds like they're describing the "Immediate Display" setting...not sure if the 605 has that, but it's in the Miscellaneous/OSD menu on the 805.
Per the 805's manual, Immediate Display will not generate output over a component or HDMI source signal, but THX still recommends turning it off. To me, the implication is the OSD generator is still firing for HDMI/component sources even though it doesn't overlay on those signals, I can see where it could disturb the video data. It's probably fairly subtle...kind of like players/receivers that have an option to turn off video circuits when listening to audio only. I'm sure some folks can hear a difference, but I'm not one of them.

My 805 puts out menu through composite, S-video, or component but not HDMI.

Thank You So Very Much David!
Your help is appreciated...so, when you say I have it correct, do you mean that the CONNECTIONS are correct? That is, HDMI cable OUT from the PLAYER to the 605's HDMI IN and then a second HDMI cable OUT from the 605 to my TV's HDMI IN? This would be the correct way to send audio AND video from the player digitally?
Now, when you say "press and hold DISPLAY," do you mean on the 605's remote or on my Sony SXRD's remote? I have held the DISPLAY button on my TV's remote when playing DVDs or Blu rays and it indicates "1080p" is coming from the player (through the receiver, I suppose, too)...is this all I need to know to ensure the 605 is passing 1080p video straight through?
The essential question I had was, does the 605 pass 1080p video over HDMI -- no other connections -- straight through to a display with no signal loss or "conversions" of any kind? I'm running my DVDs and Blu rays at 1080p out of the player...
Thank you so much, once again, for your help.

Thank you so much also, Brent!
So I do have the connections right? That is, HDMI OUT from the Blu ray player to the 605's HDMI IN, and then HDMI OUT from the 605 to HDMI IN of my Sony SXRD display?
I haven't seen the Home Theater issue you mentioned yet...must still be in the mail. However, it sounds like they're describing the "Immediate Display" setting...not sure if the 605 has that, but it's in the Miscellaneous/OSD menu on the 805.
Interesting...yes, I just received my issue in the mail...they compare a bunch of higher end receivers from Denon, Onkyo, Sony and Yamaha and analyze their video performance...but I think it was more about analog sources being upscaled through HDMI...
At any rate, I was concerned that the onscreen menu of my 605 was degrading the signal because they said it was doing so in the one they reviewed in Home Theater; again, it was a higher end model than my 605. My 605 does not have that "Immediate Display" menu you mention, I don't believe, but it does have something called an "HDMI MONITOR" in the setup menu, which I have set to "YES"...I originally thought this was so the receiver could pass video through it, but later found out it's actually to control whether or not you want an onscreen menu to appear when you're connected via HDMI...I'm hoping this is something that is not degrading the signal quality of incoming 1080p HDMI signals...
Per the 805's manual, Immediate Display will not generate output over a component or HDMI source signal, but THX still recommends turning it off. To me, the implication is the OSD generator is still firing for HDMI/component sources even though it doesn't overlay on those signals, I can see where it could disturb the video data. I'm sure some folks can hear a difference, but I'm not one of them.
Again, interesting...I don't have an "immediate display" on my 605, but I'm wondering if 1080p is indeed passing fine from my player through this receiver and out to the display...
Thank you again, Brent.

That's weird; I would think the menu would come over HDMI just as easily, especially with that higher end Onkyo...

Re: Is My Onkyo '605 Set Up Properly?
So then is this the proper setup for passing audio AND video over HDMI exclusively?
HDMI OUT of the Blu ray player to HDMI IN of the Onkyo 605...then a second HDMI cable going HDMI OUT of the 605 receiver to a Sony SXRD RPHDTV's HDMI IN...
Would this be correct for passing audio and video signals over HDMI for processing in the receiver and getting the video to the display? Do the HDMI cables make a difference for sound quality -- I have the Blu ray player set to decode TrueHD signals into PCM because it can't bitstream them, but should the Monster HDMI cables I'm using pass the high resolution codecs just fine?
I have my Blu ray player set to output HDMI audio and video -- both are set to HDMI AUDIO OUT ON and HDMI VIDEO OUT to ON...so that would be all that's needed for getting the signals out of the player over HDMI and to the receiver and TV, correct?
Thanks again, everyone.
