Onkyo set up - shutting down

I'm trying to set up an Onkyo SR 805 receiver.

When I use the mic to calibrate the 5 channel speakers, the unit shuts down to standby mode. I have tried this several times with the same result.

I'm following the directions in the manual.

Re: Onkyo set up - shutting down

What happens if you simply play a source tuner/cd/dvd/etc. without doing the calibration?

How far into the setup does it get? Right front, center, etc.

Have you double checked your speaker wires at both the 805 and the speaker? If even one strand is touching, the 805 could protecting itself from a short circuit.

Re: Onkyo set up - shutting down

Since the 805 is known to run kinda warm, you don't want it closed in an entertainment center either, unless you have a fan blowing on it. Most times, when receivers shut down, it's what Brent said about the wires........

Re: Onkyo set up - shutting down

Hi:
My responces are in CAPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What happens if you simply play a source tuner/cd/dvd/etc. without doing the calibration? WORKS FINE FOR HOURS AT A TIME WITH NO ISSUES BUT THE BALANCE CONTROLS DO NOT WORK AND THE REAR SPEAKERS ARE TOO SOFT AND SUB IS SILENT.

How far into the setup does it get? Right front, center, etc. SET UP SENDS TEST SIGNAL TO RIGHT FRONT, CENTER, LEFT FRONT, THEN GOES VERY SOFT TEST TONE TO RIGHT REAR THEN QUITS TO STANDBY MODE.

Have you double checked your speaker wires at both the 805 and the speaker? If even one strand is touching, the 805 could protecting itself from a short circuit. NOT REALLY BUT ALL SPEAKERS EXCEPT SUB PLAY OK WHEN CONNECTED TO CABLE BOX AND CD PLAYER. REAR CHANNELS ARE SAME SPEAKER SET AS FRONTS BUT THEY PUT OUT VERY FAINT SOUND COMPARED TO FRONT AND CENTER.

SO YOU SUSPECT THE SPEAKER WIRES ARE NOT SECURELY FASTENED?

THANKS!

-Brent

Also double check to make sure the polarity is right, on rear speakers.
In case you're not familiar.............
make sure the +/- sides of the speaker wire, are the same at the speaker connection, as they are at the receiver connection, for the rears.

You may also need to adjust the distances and speaker levels, for the rears, in the receiver's setup menus.

Make sure your "rears" are plugged into the side surrounds, not the rear surrounds. Is you sub plugged into the correct place (sub out, not analog in)?

Make sure the mic is on a tripod and not close to a wall. It should be in the 'sweet spot' for the first measurement. Only use the mic that came with your Onkyo.

Audyssey sets the distance and trims.. No need to do that first (they will be ignored). It also detects polarity is also checked, but it will not stop Audyssee (since some speakers are purposely reversed).

If you have anything running (fan on tv, AC, fridge) the mic will pick that up and may cause a problem.

And please, double check for crossed or frayed speaker wires.

Re: Onkyo set up - shutting down

Thanks guys

My rears are connected to the rear terminals on the receiver; so I should instead connect them to the side souround? I'm using color coded wires so the wire colors match the receiver input terminals and the speaker terminals - so I assume the polarity is correct.

I rechecked the speaker wire connections - all OK.

I am now able to adjust the sound levels with the rears set at +10DB and the fronts and center set at - 4 DB.

...receiver still shuts down on set up mode, however.

Yes, "rears" are for 7.1 setup. Sides are for 5.1.
