Denon 3808CI - Zone 2

Setup:

1. Denon 3808CI controlling 7.1 theatre room in basement
2. Harmon Kardon AVR-75 controlling Zone 2 speakers positioned on main level of house
3. Media devices such as DVD, Apple TV and Satellite connected to Denon via HDMI cables for 7.1 threatre sound. I also have RCA cables connected to the Harmon Kardon so that I can send sound to Zone 2. This setup works fine.

Question: I've tried connecting the Denon 3808 directly to the Harmon Karmon using an RCA cable connecting the Zone 2 pre-out on the Denon to a selected input on the HK. I activate Zone 2 on the Denon and turn to the appropriate source such as the DVD player. The HK is set to the correct source. My question is why am I not getting any sound to my Zone 2 speakers using this setup. I use to have a Yamaha receiver connected to the Zone 2 pre-out on the Denon and everything worked fine. I switched out the yamaha because it constantly shut off if the volume exceeded a certain db. The HK is newer and does not give me this problem. I would like to use the zone 2 pre-out on the Denon because that is what it's there for so if you can provide me with some help I would appreciate it. Thank you.

The only thing jumping out at me is that you have your sources all connected with digital HDMI. AFAIK Zone 2 outputs only work with analog connections (i.e., the red/white RCA cables). It's an easy enough fix, just add a set of RCA cables between each source and the Denon that you want sent to the second zone HK receiver.

Re: Denon 3808CI - Zone 2

Thanks Wayne,

I do have each device connected to the Denon with HDMI cables plus analog cables as you suggested. It did work for me in the past when I had the Yamaha receiver connect to the Denon pre-out but for some reason it's not working with the HK. I appreciate your input.

Ok you asked so here are some dumb questions, A tape monitor button isnt pressed on the H/K is it? The speakers are turned on on the H/K? What do you have the output from the Denon plugged into on the H/K?

Re: Denon 3808CI - Zone 2

Hi Jeff,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I will check the tape monitor button. The speakers are turned on because I was able to get the tuner working. I didn't know I could turn the speakers off. Where do I check this? I have the output on the Denon plugged into the CD input on the HK.

On a side note, I presently have analog cables running from my media devices to the HK but I find that I need to turn the volume on the HK to maximum in order to get an acceptable volume level to my home speakers. Is this normal?

Thanks for helping me and your questions are definitely not dumb.

If you get the tuner to work the speakers are on and the tape monitor button is not turned on. You need to go into the volume setup for zone 2 and set it for 0db. Make sure you turn your H/K down first
