Denon 3808CI Internet Options

I just purchased a Denon 3808CI and I want to connect to the internet to receive firmware updates. My setup is as follows:

(Upstair's Den)
Desktop (running Vista) connected to a wireless router/modem (2Wire 2700).

(Downstairs)
Denon 3808CI
Wireless desktop (running XP) positioned next to Denon 3808CI. I have access to the internet via this wireless desktop. Both the Denon and the wireless desktop have available ethernet ports.

I have not tried this solution yet but I plan on connecting the Denon to the wireless desktop using a crossover cable and allowing connection to the internet via the wireless PC.
The reason I like this approach is because I can use my existing equipment. Am I on the right track or is there a better solution out there that won't cost a lot?

One thought, there are some more 'networking' oriented solutions that you can look at to connect a wired device (the Denon) to your wireless netowork. I think some of the major network vendors (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear) make a wireless bridge, which looks like an access point, with an antenna and an ethernet port. Connect the bridge to your wireless LAN and connect the Denon to the bridge. What is basically allows you to do is connect a range of wired devices to a wireless LAN.

I'm not sure whether the crossover cable will work, I may have thought that crossovers allowed you to connect two pcs, not provide internet access.

There may yet be other ways to do this.

or a cheap wireless router, set to bridge mode. Odds are good that you'll need those extra 100baseT ports at some point-- for bluray perhaps.

Thanks,

I haven't had a chance to try either suggestion yet but it's good to know I have some options. I do have a spare Belkin router sittting around so that option is a good one. I really appreciate your help and will let you know what solution I end up using.

The crossover option should work...but of course that solution requires that your PC be on whenever your 3808 requires Internet access...

Re: Denon 3808CI Internet Options

Thanks everyone for all your help. This forum was very valuable to me.

I went with the crossover cable solution and it worked great. I updated my firmware no problem using the wireless internet connnection.

Solution
Connect a crossover cable to the receiver close to the Denon.
In windows Click start, settings, control Panel and open Network Connections.

From there select your Wireless connection and Click Properties, Advanced tab and Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box and hit OK.

You should get a message that reads,

When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP
address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on
your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them
to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet
Connection Sharing?

Hit Yes.

So now all you should have to do is setup your Dennon unit to use a static IP, Just use the next one in the chain so 192.168.0.2 Subnet 255.255.255.0.

Thanks again.
