Onkyo vs. Sony
I am trying to decide which receiver I should get--the Onkyo SR-605 or the Sony DG-910. Both have good reviews--which is better for Ht for Panny BD 30 DVD and Panny Front Projector--AX-200u? Any differences or user pros/cons is needed

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
You may want to wait a couple of months for the new Sony DG920:
The $600 STR-DG920 and $400 STR-DG820 are 7x110-watt AVRs with four HDMI inputs, but the DG920 adds Deep Color support for greater color depth on compatible televisions and up-scaling of standard-definition video to 1080p via HDMI. The 920 also adds an icon-driven menu system to simplify device and content navigation.
There's more info on Twice.com-- look under home audio.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
Thanks for the info--if you had to choose today which one do you think? I am leaning to the Onkyo based on the reviews I have read.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
I have an older Onkyo (TX-SR800) for my basement system. This unit does not have HDMI inputs, which for my setup attached to it is okay- all components (TV, DVD, cable, etc.) do not have HDMI either. My new setup (Sony 52" XBR4+ PS3+ Oppo 981 + FIOS DVR) on the other hand is all HDMI. The new Sony 920 reads as though it would fit the new system and do so at a good price.
I've been quite happy with my current Onkyo and if there was a model comparable to the 920, I'd give it a look. Right now, I can wait the 2-3 months until the 920 comes out.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
Are there any other receivers you would consider than the Onkyo and Sony? The 605 offers a lot of features for the money, but there are also some other options available for similar coin or slightly more that would give you additional expandability and possibly better performance... -TD

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
I have the Onkyo 705 and have been very pleased with it. It has one more HDMI port, 100 watts per channel rather than 90, and THX, but otherwise, the two (605 & 705) seem to be the same. It handles all of the advanced audio codecs beautifully.
The upscaling it does is quite good. Laserdiscs look very nice upscaled through the Onkyo.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
The 705 also has pre-outs which will allow for external amplification, a serious factor IMO if it's used for anything other than casual listening... -TD

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
The new Yamaha RX-V663, available at J&R, also merits serious consideration.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
The 705 has Audyssey MultiEQ vs 2EQ on the 605. MultiEQ allows for 8 listen positions. The 705 also includes a fan (mine has yet to turn on but I feel better knowing it is there).

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
I personally would not buy anything Sony for audio... Anything from Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon in your price range would be better sounding than a Sony RCVR.
All highs.... all lows... it must be.....YUK!!!!

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
IMO, keep Sony in the mix. The STR-DGx20 series isn't even out yet so it's kind of silly to dismiss them out of hand based on someone else's opinion. Do your homework and draw your own conclusions based on facts.

Re: Onkyo vs. Sony
I've got to agree with Keith. I've owned both Sony and Onkyo and wuld hands-down recommend anything Onkyo makes over Sony's non-ES receivers. Sony's receivers (again, except for ES) have never had a good reputation.
To Keith's excellent list, I would add Harmon Kardon.
