Speakers or Receiver?

I have a Phillips 5.1, 500 watt home theater. I dropped about $250 bucks on it at walmart. For the price the sound is great, however I am looking to upgrade. I am wondering if I will get more gain out of upgrading the receiver first or the speakers. Either way, I am looking at keeping the system at the same wattage. Suggestions (general or specific)?

The one thing you are most concerned with is the one that means nothing. Watt ratings are mostly made up, so just stop paying so much attention to them.

You may not be able to upgrade part of the system. HTiBs in that price are often proprietary and have to go together for one reason or another. Without more info, it's hard to give a suggestion.

Re: Speakers or Receiver?

John is correct about watts. It is a mostly inaccurate stat and even if it is accurate, it says nothing about the capability of a system if you don't include the sensitivity rating of the speakers.

List the model number of your Phillips unit. We can better assess the upgrade path if we know exactly what you are working with first.
