problem with onkyo TX-SR605

Sometimes when i play a dvd loud (75 to 82db) the dvd will shut the receiver off
and the power button flashes. It continues flashing until i power on again.
This happened twice watching Beowulf (when Grendel is screaming loudly)
It happened before with other discs. Not all the time but it does happen.
If i lower the volume it plays aok. Happened with the Brave One also.
Is this a common problem? I like it loud and it is very frustrating when this happens. Any suggestions would be welcome.

More than likely it's heat. You have to have at least 6 inches of clearance above the receiver and it can't be in an enclosed cabinet. If it is enclosed, consider a ventilation fan for the back of the enclosure (or at least keep the door open).

Do you have a powered sub? Are the speakers set to "Large"? If so, set them to small and try a reasonable crossover of 80-100 Hz, but that is just a guess because you give no info about the equipment you have. The receiver is going into protection to prevent you from destroying it. This is most likely caused by too much power drain and/or low impedance, which leads to several problems, including heat as Jeff mentioned. Set up properly, this should not happen.

They flutter behind you, your possible pasts.

It could be one little strand of the speaker wire, touching something it shouldn't. Make sure speaker wires are connected very good, at both ends, of each wire. This is the culprit, a lot of times..................
Good luck!
