Denon 3802 and optical audio

I have a Denon 3802 and I am having difficulty achieving optical audio on a recently installed upconverter DVD (Sony), I went through the system setup and designated the DVD as optical 1 and it is connected with a signal on both ends. The AVR will not recognize the digital signal. The problem may be something obvious but consulting the Denon manual is like reading ancient sanskrit.

Re: Denon 3802 and optical audio

I cracked the sanskrit code - turn the function dial to coax/optical while in the DVD mode and push the auto button. Presto, digital signal.

The first place to check is with the optical cable. It may be damaged. So, try another one.
