May I have some input please....

Evening everyone:

I am in the process of putting together my HT system. I already have the 47inch 1080p LCD, Samsung BD-P1400 Blu Ray, and xbox 360. I also have a Harmony 890 remote to control everything behind closed doors.

Next wed or thurs I will be ordering a Onkyo 705 reciever. I plan to run my blu ray, cable (both HDMI) and xbox through the reciever then a single HDMI to the TV. Because I have bought all of these componets (except the xbox) and getting custom cabinets/shelves made my budget has been squeezed a bit. So I am looking at these speakers. Mind you we're going from TV speakers to the suround sound.

1) Harman Kardon HKTS 15 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System 299.00

2)Klipsch KSW10 Subwoofer 5 Speakers Home Theater System (used) 250.00 (I hope)

3)Infinity TSS-500 Charcoal Home Theater System 259.00

4)HT-600 - P Series 5.1 Home Theater Speakers (not sure of price yet.)

So what do you folks think. I looked at Polk but it only had an 8inch sub.

What are the characteristics of your room, such as approximate dimensions, dedicated or multipurpose etc.

My advice would be to purchase affordable [but quality] speakers as you can afford to do so. If you need something just to tide you over, then go ahead and get one of the solutions you listed, but I can guarantee you'll be replacing them soon based on the choice of receiver you made. I don't know a lot about speakers, but I have been happy with my axioms. You might want to check out their web site [www.axiomaudio.com]. They won't fit your budget just yet, but they are actually pretty affordable for the quality, so something to keep in mind.

Also, don't buy a compromise sub. Save you $$ and get something that will handle the workload. A great sub can compensate to some degree for marginal fronts. I recommend SVS, but there are other choices which may be more affordable.

The room is kinda small...12x20. Furtherest from the TV is 11'. I am going to put two speakers on the shelves in front, then of course the center speaker under the TV (which will go above the fireplace.) Then I was going to place the other two speakers just above head level on the back wall (couch is on the back wall). The sub would prob go in a little area in the front left on the floor in a corner.

This room is also my den, so we do alot of different things in there. One is family time, sometimes we eat dinner in there, and then of course have friends over.

Thanks...and yes the speakers are just to get us off the ground.

Of the ones you mentioned, I'd probably go for the Infinity setup. But, with the receiver you're buying, you really should be looking at something more like this: SVSound - Complete Systems

I understand the need to stay in budget, but in the long run it always costs more to compromise on quality. I learned this the hard way and have a room full of stuff I've outgrown to prove it. Now I buy only high quality components. My wife thinks I'm crazy, as a speaker is a speaker to her, but what can I say???

Whatever you decide, I think you'll be happy, as long as you know what you're getting for your $$ beforehand.
