Help with my new Onkyo TX-SR605

I just got one in today. I have the TX-SR605. I have a 65" Toshiba DLP, I have Dish Network and I have a JVC DVD/Surround Sound sytem. Now my problem is I got my HDMI cables running from my surround sound and my dish receiver to my Onkyo receiver and HDMI cable from my TV running to my Onkyo receiver. When I'm watching tv I can't get any sound out of my tv speakers or my surround sound speakers. I got the picture just find it's just no sound. I can swith it to DVD and my sound from my DVD/Surround sound runs fine along with the picture. So anybody know how i can fix the sound while i'm watching tv and how do I control the volume through my receiver? Thanks.

Did you assign the input you used for the sat, to the tv/dbs? Once the input is assigned to the tv/dbs, you should be able to control the volume, through the receiver. There should be no audio coming from the tv, in an HT setup.

Also, double check the sat box setup menus, to make sure the audio output is set to "Dolby Digital". In dvd player's setup menus, make sure the audio output is set to "Bitstream", instead of PCM, for regular DD and DTS. For Blu ray player, you want it set to PCM.

The Onkyo IS the surround sound receiver, or do you have one of those JVC HTIBs hooked up to the Onkyo via HDMI, trying to use it like a preamp? If so, since it is powered, it may have to hookup to "pre-outs", instead of HDMI. Does the 605 have pre-outs? Somebody help me here with this..................
If that's the case, I'd get a new dvd player, and use the JVC in another room.
Good luck!

The JVC is a surround sound/DVD player. It has six speakers and a sub. The six speakers are wired into the sub and the sub connects to the player by a 8-prong S-video cord.

Re: Help with my new Onkyo TX-SR605

Shannon, how exactly is your gear connected.

It should be Dish receiver, DVD player, any other source component connected to inputs on the 605. The 605 can then be connected via HDMI to the Toshiba TV. Speakers should be connected to the 605.

It's possible you have the 605 configured so that HDMI Audio Out is "On"...this means it will pass audio receive via HDMI on to the monitor and not process it internally. In other words, when HDMI Audio Out = On, the 605 will not play sound through its connected speakers. This setting should be off. Page 84 of your manual.

Shannon, the setup you have going doesn't make sense. You have both a surround receiver AND a HTiB. My gut feeling is you are so far from having it all connected correctly, I don't even know where to start. Ed already tried.

Did you even look at the manual for the Onkyo? What are the speakers connected to?

It sound like the ONLY way to even use the Onkyo you just bought is to completely scrap the entire HTiB set and buy new speakers, sub. Didn't you do just a bit of research before buying the Onkyo?

They flutter behind you, your possible pasts.

Re: Help with my new Onkyo TX-SR605

I got it all fixed. I undid all my speakers and connected them to my receiver. I now have my Dish, TV, and PS3 running to my receiver by HDMI cables. I'm trying to get my DVD player hooked up now. I actually have video but no sound. I connect it using a red, blue, green cable and a Opitcal Digital Audio Cable. I went and switched everything that I thought I needed but i'm still not getting sound out of my speakers.

Re: Help with my new Onkyo TX-SR605

With a PS3, why do you need a separate DVD player?

The component video and digital inputs are assignable. Did you go into the 605's menus and assign a device to the inputs the DVD player's connected to? As John said, it's all in the manual...
