Playing LPs with home theater?

After dragging my feet and pinching pennies for years I am going to totally remake my audio-visual system. Plan to buy a sony HDTV KDL-40V2500 and a onkyo HT-S908 home theater. Question is what to do about my occasional turntable use? I have read some reference to using a pre-amp. What do I need? Can I incorporate my 10 year old JVC amp somehow to make this work?

A second question is should I be concerned about the onkyo system not being THX capable, which I really do not understand what that is? Obviously I am on the front end of the learning curve. Thanks

All you will need to connect your turntable is a phono preamp. Cambridge Audio makes a very reasonably priced phono preamp, the Azur 540P, which retails for under $100. I had one briefly until I upgraded to a Naim Stageline / Flat-Cap2x, it offers very good value for the money. Is your cartridge Moving Coil (MC) or Moving Magnet (MM)?

Geez...you'd think that a turntable input would be standard...even to this day!

Alon

Thanks for info. But heck I don't know what type of cartridge I have. Does it make a difference on selecting the pre-amp. So I guess the amp for my current audio system will not work, huh?

Hi John, it can make a difference what type of cartridge you have when selecting a phono pre-amp. What model turntable and cartridge do you own?

You could always trying using the phono input on your old amp, then use an analogue output to connect to your new receiver. Should work as well.

Re: Playing LPs with home theater?

If your old/current audio system has a line level out (pre-out or output for tape or cassette recording) you can lug your TT into the old audio, then the line level out to any input on the new HT rcvr.

It may even be possible that the new rcvr has an input compatible with a turntable...
