New to Home Audio looking to add some lowend to existing "system"

I currently have an Aiwa bookshelf system from like 6 years ago. 140W total with 35W going to the two "subwoofers" in the bottom of the bookshelf speakers.

Well, I got into car audio and am used to having my 1kW of subwoofer in addition to my soundstage. Now my music feels empty.

Well, I grabbed one of my Alpine Type R 12" subs and threw it in a crappy ported prefab to play with.

Well, 35W to a sub that does a supposed 500w RMS just isn't cutting it. So what should I do?

Replace existing reciever with something that can send the sub some power.
Keep existing and buy an amplifier.
Or other suggestions?

I'm on an income of around $100/week expendable cash so any ideas? I would like to be able to run both subs in a ported enclosure I built and fully power them but I don't see that happening cheaply...

Thanks in advance
