Possible amplifier damage

Hey all just had a quick question:

I was hooking up an external equalizer to my receiver yesterday using the tape 2 output and tape 2 monitor input connections as I don't have pre-amp outs/ins on my receiver. In my haste I accidentally connected one of the outputs on the equalizer to one of the tape 2 outputs on the receiver. I powered on the equalizer and noticed that the level meters on it were going nuts. I hadn't yet powered on my receiver so it didn't make sense to me that I would be getting a reading on the equalizer's level meters. I turned the equalizer back off and checked my connection and found out the connections mistake I made. My question is this: is there any way I could have damaged the pre-amp stage in my receiver? The pre-amp in the equalizer seems to be shot as whenever I turn it on the level meters just max out even with nothing connected to it. My receiver seems to be ok and I haven't noticed anything odd from it yet but I wanted to get the opinion of others on this. Thanks for the help!
