I mentioned in another thread that my old Pioneer VSX 9500 is dead.

I can buy a new Pioneer from Pioneer direct for a pretty good deal.

A friend of a friend of a friend has this Denon AVR 886 for sale for $400.

Not sure which one to buy.

Any thoughts?

Secondact.com, an authorized Denon refurb dealer, had been selling 886 for $299 (with warranty) plus shipping until recently. Must have sold out. They now have the 2307 for $379 plus shipping, and nice deals on other models, so I'd look around a bit more. Also look at ac4l.com for Onkyo and Marantz refurbs. If nothing else, you can see what price things are going for so you don't over pay elsewhere. The 1017 can be had new for $329 shipped, btw. Check pricegrabber.com for comparison pricing.

Again, I'm getting the distict impression that you must be talking about inflated CDN pricing because, as Gene pointed out, you can get the stuff way cheaper with a simple internet search.

If I were you, I'd set a budget and try to find a US retailer willing to ship to Canada. Forget the warranty, for the price savings you can get by buying half price in the US, the point is moot. Better yet, plan a shopping trip accross the border (you must live within a 2 hour drive, most of us do).

If you're not Canadian, then the $400 your friend wants is too much, you can get better for less on-line.
