Onkyo 605 tale

I purchased one of the 605 refurb units from Shoponkyo about 10 days ago. When I received it and got it hooked up, my Samsung DLP wouldn't accept the video from my Tosh A2 player going through the 605 via hdmi. I played with every setting on the 605 and A2 I could find, but no luck. I bought a new 605 from Circuit City online ($429 with free shipping at the time), and it worked right away, so the refurb 605 was defective.

I just got the new 605 late yesterday. The setup went pretty fast. I first determined the video using hdmi would work with the Samsung tv, then did the Audyssey audio setup. That went very smoothly and I liked the results, although I think I might bump the volume up on my SVS subwoofer a little.

Picture quality coming through the 605 is great. I guess it really should be since the signal is digital all the way to the tv. I've always liked the idea of running video directly to the tv, but with hdmi I guess you don't really have to worry. However, I am using hdmi only, no component or s-video connections, so I don't have to worry about video processing by the receiver (which apparently isn't that great according to reviews).

I only watched about 30 - 45 minutes of a movie last night, but the top of the receiver did not get all that hot. In fact, I could lay my hand on top of it without any discomfort, which is in contrast to my Comcast DVR, which gets very hot. I was worried about this because of all the talk about Onkyo receivers running way hot, but that's not the case with mine.

Overall, I'm very happy with the receiver, easy to setup, hdmi does away with all the cables and the Audyessy audio setup was a snap. However, since I have 30 days to return it to CC if I want, I'm thinking an Onkyo 805 would sure be nice.

Re: Onkyo 605 tale

Excuse my "dumbness" here, but with my new HK 247, if I run my TV "through" the receiver via HDMI, will it "upconvert" everything to 720p like quality?

Thanks,
K

From doing a quick check of the HK website, it looks like the 247 will convert analog signals to 720P digital signals and send them over the HDMI connection to your tv. This means if you plug in a DVD player using component cables to the 247, you will only have to have one HDMI cable going from the 247 to the tv (assuming your tv has a hdmi input). If you have a dvd player plugged into the 247 using an hdmi connection, the 247 should pass the signal straight through to the tv over the hdmi cable without doing any conversion.

Re: Onkyo 605 tale

Thanks Craig. I posted another thread earlier about how I should hook everything up. If you get a minute, can you look at that one and answer my questions?

Thanks,
Kevin
