I've only messed around with Onkyos at a few retailers, but have noticed they do usually run hotter than most other brands. Is *that* what people are worried about?
If so,
in my opinion I wouldn't worry about it. That's because a brand of receivers I used to sell back in the 90s, Technics, IMO used to run even hotter than these Onkyos and I personally never heard about any bad things happening as a result of their heat output (and strangely enough they were the most reliable brand we sold, despite the heat issue). I've owned a Technics SA-DA8 A/V receiver myself for the last 6 years and it also generates lots of heat - I just make sure it has extra space above the power amp vent.
If those Onkyos are like the Technics receivers, they may be using a standard class A/B power amplifier design but IIRC they stay in the
class A mode longer than conventional designs to allow for a cleaner signal. And that class A mode exists at
low to mid power levels, which is why the Technics run hot as heck even when just idling with no input signal (Technics called them their "New Class A" amps and later in an effort to reduce some of the heat output, "Class H+"). Usually pure Class A amps are only sold by hi-end amp manufacturers because of the need for very large power transformers and huge heatsinks to dissipate all that heat.
So it wouldn't bother me personally to buy an Onkyo.
