what to look for???

Hey all,
After several years without looking at stereo equipment I find my self all dazed and confused all over again. I am wanting to upgrade my old Technics system and as much as I would like a full HT set up it will probably not happen, so heres the question.
What should I be looking for? $ is tight so I figure $500 is for a new receiver.
Any recommendations????? I will be running a CD changer, Turn Table and yes ever a cassette deck
Currently I have a Receiver and a separate tuner, do you need them both to get radio reception? Like I said its been a while.
