Onkyo TX-SR805 down converts componet

I just purchased a Onkyo TX-SR805 ($699.00). It is a nice big reciever but I'm going to return it because it down converts my cable box 1080 componet to 720 hdmi. The only reason I was replacing my old reciever was to get hdmi switching to be able to run just cable to the tv and have to change the input selection on the tv. I like the Denon 3808 but the best price so far is $1265.00 which is to high for me right now.

Is there a work around for this down converting on this receiver?

Your player has the ability to downconvert and or upconvert.

I'm guessing your HDMI Monitor Setting is set to 720p. Try going into the menu settings and changing it to 1080p.

I'm guessing that is exactly what your problem is. And or you can double check your output from the Cable box. What kind of cable do you have? Usually you can leave the TV on and turn the cable box off and then hit menu while the box is off and a white screen will appear on your tv which will allow you to change the output settings. If not then it's not a motorola box and it's probably the above stated reason.

Tv is set for 1080p, have been running the motorla box to tv and geting 1080i on the hd channels (the tv displays the current resolution being inputed) then hooked up the onkyo and then the tv shows only 720 input from the cable box on hd channels and 1080p on the hd and blueray players, did a review search on the onkyo at cnet and read this "The bad: Downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI; HDMI video quality converted from analog sources may not satisfy videophiles; current crop of high-def disc players lack bit-stream output, which is needed to utilize the receiver's onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding."

I never imagined any signal would be downconverted so I didn't think to look for it, live and learn. Saving my penies for the Denon.

I wonder why would the receiver only downconvert the cable box's signal?

I also don't think the Onkyo is downconverting anything.....unless this is another HDMI-related f*** up (it has many).

The Onkyo 875 will upconvert analog inputs to 1080p. It has one of the Reon chipsets, which is supposed to be a decent, bug free deinterlacer. Not sure if it's a cost effective alternative, though

I am wondering if that was the only issue with that receiver? I was at Fry's Electronics and saw two customers returning there Onkyo TX-SR805's today. This is not the first time in the store I have seen people returning this receiver. Whats going on with it, has anyone exsperience any other problems other than downconverting? Am currently doing research into upgrading my old Yamaha RX-V995. If this receiver is a problem child I will put it on my stay away list.

The 805 I just returned I purchased as a floor/return model. No where in the manual does mention anything about a down convert of the resolution componet to HDMI. I found out only by setting it up and using it, also reinforced by then reading a couple of online pro reviews that state it as a problem as quoted in a earlier post by me. The 875 I believe will not be a problem upconverting but at a higher price point.

I would stay clear of the Onkyo 805 and possibly the 705, 605. if you plan on hooking up any componet units.

I think I will take a pass and avoid Onkyo all together, I just do not want the headaches. I was thinking about the 905 but with all the problems of the other models that one is history. Sorry to hear about the problems you had mototana hope you find a solution.

I also have an 805 and if I recall, it does state in the manual that the max resolution for upconversion to HDMI is 720p. The solution is to also run a component cable out to your tv/projector as that will pass whatever signal it gets. That's what I do and I'm totally happy with it.

Oops, didn't put these two statements from different posts together, otherwise I would have noticed the Onkyo - for whatever reason

- is only downrezzing the analog connection.

Just wanted to point out that its not down-converting if ti goes from 1080i to 720p

720p is showing you higher resolution, of course it is easier for a 1080p tv to convert 1080i to 1080p...
